VT8363A North bridge bug with Athlon (C type)
Posted by overclocker at 13:16

The VIA Northbridges with the product code 1EA0 (left) or 1EA4 could experience restart problems. The chips with the code 2EA1 (on the right) are perfect. This North bridge is used on the AMD Athlon KT133A boards. This problem is independent of the mainboard manufacturer.

According to Stephan Schwolow from MSI Germany, the problem can be identified with the VIA-Northbridge on the basis of a warm restart from the DOS-mode. After which, a blank screen will appear.

20% to 30% of such cases can be resolved by raising the I/O voltage from 3.3v to 3.45v

My Abit KT7A Raid has the type just like on the left (the one with the bug) , while my Asus A7V133 is rock solid, because it has the one like of the right (free bug)

a news clip from [H]ardOCP re: this issue:
Quote:
It seems as though there are conflicting bug reports about the early versions of the KT133A chipset that was reported yesterday. Here is message from a bulletin board, so consider this a rumor for sure. Thanks for Sean for passing this along.

Dear All,
There is no bug in the KT133A chipset. The German site that started all of this says in their article that they made certain changes to the northbridge registry settings. This is what has caused the problem. I cannot believe that one unsubstantiated article and people in this forum just take it as "fact". Who is actually having this "problem" they mention? I handle almost 100 technical support emails per day and have NEVER had an email with this issue.

Regards
John Gatt
VIA Technologies, Inc.
i think this game is getting a little tired..someone blames VIA for something, they say no..
apparently the site reporting the problem was 'tweaking'their registry, and VIA say this was the problem, and their problem??!!
who can tell anymore sheesh!

As some of you know, I just ordered an Epox 8KTA3. Epox told me that my board will not be effected.

I'm got a 1.2 GHz 266FSB AXIA chip for $150. I am gonna build it over the weekend. Any suggestions for how I won't chip the processor with the HSF. Thanks!!!

Cool

Good golly DS, AXIA 1.2GHz 266 for $150, where did you get it? And is it factory unlocked already? So cheap & so sweet. What is your mobo and HSF man? Because it's all depend on your HSF clip. There are good ones & simple to install & there are some hard to install. For suggestion, add a non conductive shim on it, get it at: www.crazypc.com Just do not apply pressure to hard. Actually the AMD processor already incorporates 4 pads on the 4 edges. They will help on the pressure being pushed.

The non-conductive shim from Crazypc, is the one! I wouldn't be without it. I have a 1.33 oc'ed to 1620mhz and it works great. The right height, and fit. ''
