Keep in mind people, I'm just passing this link along. Apparently AMD made quite a few changes after seeing this video, and it was quite some time ago.
Is it true that particular video lowered AMD's sales considerably?

I'm not sure, but what TH *does* mention is that AMD took the video very seriously indeed and entered into long discussions about it, the test setup, etc., with an eye on preventing this from recurring.

I think this was the super-hot "Palomino" chip. The "Thoroughbred" was cooler and the "Barton" was even cooler.

Yeah, the palomino was a very hot chip, not sure how it compares to the prescott though. I want someone to test it again with the new motherboard standard AMD was supposed to have implemented for the thermal protection. Any takers?

From what I know.. the major different between Intel and AMD.

Intel has a built in overheat protection on the die itself. The moment it get too hot, it will shut down the system or cause it to freeze.

AMD depend on the motherboard to shut down the system once the HSF is remove. Most implementation doesn't work very well since it a few second for the mobo to shut down, which normally too late for the cpu.

I am not sure about now though... I know AMD started taking step to fix that problem, but have not been following the news lately.

My kids have 2 AMD boxes, a 2600+ Barton Core and an 1100 Duron... I understand that there are diferences in airflow in every system, but they both run hotter than my 3.0 Northood and my wifes' 2.5 celeron... The 2600+ is in a gamer box with 6 fans and a speeze copper core HS that's rated for 3200+ so I don't think it's suffering for air... None of them get into the danger zone when gaming so it's likely a moot point anyways

amd: cheap and get the performance of an intel chip for almost half the price.

intel: overpriced crap, i remember when my 1700+ out performed my mates 2.5ghz p4, i laughed so hard when his mobo wouldn't run the ram at stock speed.

was it a retail chip? u can get it replaced due to a 3 year warranty.

The race for quality has no finish line- so technically, it's more like a death march.

I had a dual AMD system with MP2400 procs. For a few weeks every once and awhile the system would shutdown. The system was ran 24/7 for over a year and this just started to occur. It was in the summertime and the house at that time was reaching over 90F. Cause of problem, the dust collected so heavily on the HS that I could not even see the fins on the HS. Removed the dust and problem went away.

On a P4 2.53 system-not oc'ed (fortunately). Screen saver would come on and then sometimes when I tried to get out of the screen saver-the system was locked up. Finally one day the computer would not even boot. Motherboard and one stick of RAM damaged. Moved the proc to another system I had, temps of the proc 90C!

I'm glad to see that Intel motherboards finally have the same feature as the AMD based boards with shutting down the system. If that would have happened back when I had the P4 I might not have lost a stick of RAM and motherboard. The thermal throttling was nice but still damage did occur in that situation.

BTW: The dual MP2400 was replaced with a dual Xeon system (I mainly wanted the PCI-X that the dual AMD Athlon MP systems don't have). I also have a dual Opteron system. Some of us like to play on both sides of the fence.

Yes it was and it's getting replaced under warranty. Still, I've just never been a fan of AMD but I would love to play with one of their new FX's!!! Nevertheless, I think I just got a dud. Always had problems with this system.

I've been running my 2500+ at 3200+ (200 FSB), default voltages, for the past 2 months and never had a single problem. The temps around 44c . No AC/ room temp around 23c. I had trouble with AMD when i tried to overclock a T-bird 850Mhz: reached 74c hot

Why I hate Honda-

I had a 92 Civic that had to have the fuel pump replaced.

Why I hate RCA-

I had a VCR break and had to replace it.

An electronic device does sometimes break...it is a fact of life. I have ran my Mobile Barton for a long time at 3200+ speeds and I don't see a problem. I walk all over my buddies 2.4 P4 Oc'd to 2.9 all day, and I don't really see my chip exploding any time soon.

One bad apple does not ruin the bushel.

Today I could smell something burning and the pc just shut off. Took a look under the heat sink after no post and sure enough, a corner of the die was black!!! It's now DEAD.

Reminded me why I hate amd's.
Why i hate intels..the prescott runs hotter then the sun..it even burns the back of some mobo's..lol..(edited PCB)..my athlons are the most reliable computers in the house..my p4 is good at being a slow pos..(edited by PCB)
