| Why I hate amd's... I had the 2500+ processor in another machine and it's only 3 months old. Just a mild overclock (183 mhz) at default voltages and temps were fine (35c/50c idle/load). Today I could smell something burning and the pc just shut off. Took a look under the heat sink after no post and sure enough, a corner of the die was black!!! It's now DEAD. Reminded me why I hate amd's. ![]()

| Damn that sucks now if the FX-53 weren't so damn tempting I might agree that AMD sucks.

I agree, the FX-53 is tempting as it has thermal protection and is fast to boot, but the 2500+ lasting only 3 months on default voltage and good temps just shows the weak quality on the XP chips. I disagree with the fact that this could happen on any chip as well. I've overclocked every intel cpu I've ever owned and if you do it right, you'll never have an issue and I've never have. The AMD to fry so easily, just shows the superiority of the Intel. I remember seeing a test once where they had an AMD and an Intel running side by side; they removed the heatsenk off of the Intel and it continued to run for 30 seconds before the thermal protection kicked in and shut down the cpu but it was fine. The AMD heatsink was taken off and it burnt like toast in 3 seconds. Completely dead. Place the heatsink back on the Intel and it started up and was fine. Now if I could only remember the link.

Keep in mind people, I'm just passing this link along. Apparently AMD made quite a few changes after seeing this video, and it was quite some time ago.

| Remember that the AMD CPUs are built plain (die) whereas Intel CPUs are built with that huge metal core that almost acts like a HS itself that helps with the 30 second you talked about. As on the AMD, there is nothing like that of Intel's, so the moment the HS is off, the die itself has nothing to rely on so the result is what you have seen. Granted, not everyone is going to experience what you have gone through. I've gone through improper mounting of the HS on my CPU before and the PC just shuts off in about 5-7 seconds. Maybe you've got a bad CPU to begin with, which could happen to anyone in that matter. Just depends on who gets that bad CPU and you happen to be that person. And the P3 isn't that hot anyway to start with.

| I got my 2800+ to 2.4ghz and ran it for over a month with no problems at all. Temps were around 40C-50C in a very poorly air conditioned room. Still using this CPU today with no problems. The bad thing is: I cleared the BIOS to mess around with different settings and forgot hw I actually got my CPU to 2.4GHZ. I cant remember for the live of me now. I can get it that high but I cant keep it stable anymore. My 2600+ I got to 2.3GHZ Which was stable in all applications except Final Fantasy XI, I ran it that way for about 2 weeks and no burn up either. 45C-57C with its stock cooler. I think you just got a bad chip. Yes, I too have seen the THG video, and that problem has since been corrected. This is just my personal expereince.

| I'm kinda thinking what happened to that 2500+ had nothing to do with the mild overclock. It was probably defective in some way.

| I highly doubt that 17 mhz over stock was "pushing" the chip.

| Because AMDs use those rubber standoffs to space the heatsink, perhaps one had come off or had moved and allowed the heatsink to contact the die unevenly, exposing one corner of the CPU. |
