Sometimes you can get a prcessor to work with broken pin.But it's hit or miss on that.I've bent a few a time or two.But never broke one off.I have heard of people putting the broken pin in the socket hole and then inserting the prcessor and getting it to work.But have never done it my self.

I just remembered something that could be important. When I was installing the new graphics card in this comp, I was faced with a problem:
A capacitor stack (or whatever it is) on the mobo was situated right above the AGP slot and prevented me from being able to fully insert the card. So, what I did was I bent the stack as far as I needed in order to get the card in.

Below I've circled the two offending stacks on a stock photo of the MB. Only the first one was in the way of my graphics card.

After going through this fiasco, the comp ran for about half a year (Dec. 04 - May 05), though not without its share of problems (not necessarily hardware related).

Could a bent mobo stack be the source of my mobo's crap out? :eek:

All this aside: Al Shade, did you remove the motherboard from the case yet? If not, try. The reason is to look at the back of the case where the m/b was and see if there's any brown marks. It's an indication of a blown capacitor and/or voltage regulator.

Look at the caps very closely (visually I didn't see any blown, but it showed clearly by the scorch mark on the back of the case).

I use 99% Iso from the drug store.I've push caps over to get things to fit.But never pushed very hard.Just enough to tilt them out of the way.Try to clean some parts off if you want to.The water part will dry quickly.But try to do some of the stuff mentioned earlier before removing the mother board.If it still won't start then take things apart.It didn't look like that cap was pushed very far in the link you posted.But it is possible for them to leak and short out other parts or them selfs.

Okay guys.

Tomorrow I'll try doing a bare-bones start-up. I'll see about cleaning the parts. And if that doesn't work, then I'll remove the mobo and check for damage.

One last thing to get out of the way: Could the CMOS battery be at fault? On a recommendation, I took it out for a while in order to reset it. Unfortunately, I forgot the proper orientation of the + sign. Does anyone know which way it is supposed to face?

The battery + sign faces up so you can see it.

Up, yes -- but which direction? Apparently, it makes a difference. I tried it once with the + facing the bottom of the board, and the machine wouldn't start up at all. Currently I have it roughly pointed towards the cpu, which I believe is the correct config, but I'm wondering if anyone knows for sure.

That doesn't matter if which way the arrow + points.As long as it isn't upside down facing the motherboard.If you can see the + then your good to go.Actually I just looked at mine and it points to the 4 oclock posistion and it works just fine.

Ran a bunch of boot-up tests with the following configurations:

Cpu/Gfx/RAM
Cpu/Gfx
Cpu
Cpu/RAM

Cpu2/RAM
Cpu2
Cpu2/Gfx/RAM

All components not noted above were disconnected. As you can see, I tried both of my cpu's. In every case, there was no display (where applicable), and no beeps. The hardware started up normally.

After running the tests, I took the mobo out of the case in order to inspect it for visible damage. There was none.

Looks like the voltage regulator bit the dust then -- as there won't be any display when it's fried.

Won't be able to O/C much with a 533mhz (especially that high of a processor). The memory is a factor too. O/C it is using PC3200 memory. You'll have to manually adjust the memory timings if you want it at 400mhz, as the Asus board defaults to 333mhz for 533mhz procs. Get 2-2-2-2 memory if you can (like Crucial's Ballistix), so you can overclock such a high processor and hope to have a stable system.

533mhz procs are really designed for the 850e platform -- and you'll find out soon enough how much. :/

Good point, DXM. My newer cpu was the highest clocked chip released for the 850E platform, which is precisely why I bought it. I guess I'll hold off on the OC for now. Probably get an 800 fsb chip in a few months. And I'm not sure what the voltage regulator is, but I'm assuming from your post that there's no easy way of checking it. Thanks for letting me know about the memory, too. I wasn't aware that it would be clocked slower with a 533 chip.

I have the same problem with a Ga-8s655tx ultra, and I believe the problem is the PSU. Try another one from a friend if you don't want to spend the cash just to confirm, I HIGHLY recommend it.

Well sorry to hear that it's dead.You still might want to try what AMD vs. Intel has suggested.It actually could be something as simple as a cold solder joint on the board.But no way to tell where it might be.Your friend that said the board will post without memory is wrong.It will not post.It'll just sit there and beep.But maybe that's what he meant as your board won't start up at all.Oh well you need a newer one anyway.Some day mine will die to.But I can't complian.It owes me nothing.I'll fill it with cement and make a boat anchor out of it.It was only used as a backup anyway.Good Luck on your new Super Computer.
