CPU replacement under warranty?

Hey all,

Does anyone have any experience with warranty replacement on Intel boxed processors? My system shuts down under load, and I'm thinking its a problem with the CPU overheating (3.2GHz prescott, thermalright xp120 heatsink, p4p800 mobo).

My CPU idles at 63C, and load brings it up to 75C quickly and throttling kicks in. I turned off throttling in the BIOS since I was seeing such a performance hit under load. Well, the CPU gets up to around 85C, and usually shuts off if I put any more load on it after that.

I tried the stock fan, tried more case ventallation... everything! The chip overheats no matter what. Tried different power supplies, and even tried my old 2.8GHz proc (which worked like a charm.)

I never oc'ed this system... I'm thinking I just got stuck with a crappy chip. Anyone deal with Intel on warrenty replacements for something similar?

Thanks!

Paul

Yes,

I called Intel and received a RMA number and a mailing address. Mailed the bad CPU in its original Box and about 10 days later a new CPU was delivered.

I have done the same. Be prepared to read all the numbers on the ihs. I had a real hard time seeing them.

Same for me. They wanted the box/HSF though, to make sure it was "retail" and not "OEM".

I RMAd a 550 CPU for the same reason. Assuming your XP 120 is mounted properly it should cool that CPU well.

I had a similar problem, but in my case the XP 120 went bad, the heatpipes were bad, so before u rma the cpu, touch the heatpipes to see if they are hot, if not then u have a faulty XP120

Cheers
