| Differences Between Pentium 4 3.0 And 3.0E? I seem to have gotten a Pentium 4 3.0 (Intel® Pentium® 4 Processors 3 GHz - SL8JZ , I believe) from Newegg instead of a 3.0E. What's are the differences, which is better? Filter Summary lists quite a few 3.0s and 3.0Es and are seemingly identical according to their specifications. Additional Information: What I got is an awful overclocker. I can only get about 3160/210FSB out of it even after buying a supposedly great Socket 478 cooler (AVC 117140). It's at 60+ degrees under load at that speed. What's. wrong. with. this. picture? I'm so disappointed. Last edited by Akumajou : 05-19-2008 at 09:14 AM. |

| Re: Differences Between Pentium 4 3.0 And 3.0E? The filter summary lists only two socket 478 3.0gHz 90nm 1M cache cpus, the SL8JZ and SL7L4. The others are earlier 130nm cpu's with smaller caches. I don't know offhand what the difference is between the SL8JZ and SL7L4. I'm pretty certain, sad to say, that all of these cpu's are Prescott's (aka "E" suffix, as in 3.0E). That family was known for running extremely hot and consequently overclocking poorly. I suggest Googling "sl8jz" and looking at some of the forum postings that are returned, to see what temperatures and overclocks people were able to achieve with it. But I suspect the results will not be significantly better than what you have found. Intel cpu's took a quantum leap forward when they subsequently introduced the Conroe family, but I believe that and subsequent processors have only been made available in socket LGA775. Regards, -- Al Edit: If I were in need of a socket 478 cpu today, I would buy a "C" series (2.4C, 2.6C, 2.8C, 3.0C, etc) cpu on eBay. These preceded the Prescott's, but ran cooler and overclocked better.

| Re: Differences Between Pentium 4 3.0 And 3.0E? It seems that you have received a '3.0E' like you wanted. The SL8JZ is a Prescott CPU and Prescott CPU's are designated with an "E" in their label. Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz - RK80546PG0801M (BX80546PG3000E) BJB Quote:

| As ctal says, you have a Prescott CPU, which is the least desirable of the 478 CPUs. As ctal says, get a Northwood CPU, that's the one with the c at the end, 3.2c, or better yet, get the best 478 made, an Extreme Edition. The Extreme Edition is designated with EE (that's two 'E's) such as 3.2EE and is known as the Gallatin. Since there are several "Extreme Edition" CPUs made by intel, make sure you get the right one. Check the FSB rating. |

| Re: Differences Between Pentium 4 3.0 And 3.0E? But but... what does the E mean and why doesn't this particular one have it on Intel's own listing? I want to be sure that I got what I paid for ( Newegg.com - Intel Pentium 4 3.0E Prescott 3.0GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket 478 89W Single-Core Processor - CPUs / Processors ). By the way, I've only glanced at Newegg's customer reviews of this CPU, but overclocking to 3.4 seems quite common. Last edited by Akumajou : 05-20-2008 at 06:57 AM. |

A = 400 MHz FSB B = 533 MHz FSB C = 800 MHz FSB Northwood E = 800 MHz FSB Prescott Not sure about "D," or if it was ever used. Intel doesn't use these letters in a lot of their literature. You'll see it at the end of the retail box part number for the SL8JZ in the following link, although you ordered the OEM version which uses a different part number: Intel® Pentium® 4 Processors 3 GHz - SL8JZ Regards, -- Al

| Re: Differences Between Pentium 4 3.0 And 3.0E? So what's 'was cheated' referring to when he says "Other Thoughts: Check before you install ... This is the second one I have purchased from Newegg that is not a 3.0E just a plain 3.0 prescott, they still have the 1mg L2cache so check on intel.com before you install." on Customer Reviews Of Intel Pentium 4 3.0E Prescott 3.0GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket 478 89W Single-Core Processor - OEM (third review down)? |

| Re: Differences Between Pentium 4 3.0 And 3.0E? You're welcome. Also, I found that the Intel spec sheet for SL7E4 (linked to below) explicitly refers to 3.0E, while having the same specs and the same box part number as the SL8JZ. Except for the stepping (= version), that being D0 for the SL7E4, and G1 for the SL8JZ that you received. A later stepping usually means a better performing part. I think that they are simply being careless and inconsistent in showing the "E" designation on some spec sheets and not showing it on others. Intel® Pentium® 4 Processors 3E GHz - SL7E4 Intel® Pentium® 4 Processors 3 GHz - SL8JZ Intel's definition of "stepping": Stepping: Throughout the life of a processor life cycle, the processor may go through several steppings or versions. Newer steppings typically have some type of improvement over previous steppings of the processor. Regards, -- Al
