E8500 overclock result..so far !!

Did two hours PRIME and ORTHOS, games and 3Dmark...no errors so far.
TEMPS with Real Temp >> MAX 65C

E8500 now clocked at 4.2 ..with 1.41 Vcore (BIOS)

FSB 1768 and Mem 884...this with 4-4-4-10-1T (CPU-z its shows 1:1)

Good result...one to be happy with ????

Re: E8500 overclock result..so far !!

Sounds outstanding to me! I'd also run Memtest86+ for a few hours, if you haven't already.

Excellent overclock!

Re: E8500 overclock result..so far !!

In case it's not clear to anyone, CPU-Z is correct, the memory and fsb are running 1:1, for 1768 fsb and 884 memory. The clock frequency for both is 442 MHz. The memory uses both the positive-going and negative-going edges of the clock, giving DDR2-884 speed (2 x 442). The fsb uses both edges of two clock signals, phased 90 degrees apart, so its effective speed is 4 x 442 = 1768 MHz. The cpu internally has a multiplier of 9.5 (when under load), so it runs internally at 442 x 9.5 = 4200 MHz, or 4.2 GHz.

Re: E8500 overclock result..so far !!

Assuming your memory passes Memtest86+ with the parameters you've set up, upgrading your memory would not accomplish much. A video card upgrade would make a much greater difference. I have no particular knowledge of the card you are considering, or its competitors, as I'm not a gamer.

If you haven't already, see these threads concerning memory not making much difference as long as it doesn't limit the cpu and fsb overclock:

Memory bandwidth tests... any real differences (part 2)

Memory Doesn't Matter!

Re: E8500 overclock result..so far !!

Memtest86+... for 2 hours and 40 min.

NOT A SINGLE ERROR

Memory is not bad...not bad at all, some were stuck with faster memory sticks at 800 if I am correct

And >> timings >> 4-4-4-10-1T !!!!

Hans.

Re: E8500 overclock result..so far !!

Ohh no, tried OCCT...gives OFF, PC TO HOT

Shall I try MX-2 from Arctic ??

Monitoring CPU in OCCT gives 51C and in REAL TEMP only 41C !!!!!!!!!!!!????????????

Speedfan also 41C...something wrong with this OCCT !!

When OCCT is running under LOAD:
Real Temp >> 58C
Speedfan >> 61C
OCCT itslef >> 68C

Re: E8500 overclock result..so far !!

As I said earlier, I have the most faith in Realtemp, due to the intelligence that is evident in their writeup that I linked to, and due to the fact that their program was designed based in part on measurements of an E8400 with an infrared thermometer. I would ignore OCCT, although I have had no experience with it.

Yes it is remarkable how your DDR2-667 is able to run at DDR2-884 speed. A lot of DDR2-800 memories would not be able to handle that.

-- Al

Yes remarkable indeed...so I have lucky memory

There are more memory settings, like Bank Cycle Time >> 27 clocks
And more in my BIOS...is there something to gain a tiny bit more ??

You can find descriptions and recommendations concerning many or all of these other memory-related settings here:

Tech ARP - The Definitive BIOS Optimization Guide

Scroll down the page and click on each of the settings you are interested in.

I've never played with any of them aside from the basic ones (the 4-4-4-10-1T numbers). I suspect that there is not much to be gained by changing them from defaults, but that's just my suspicion.

Re: E8500 overclock result..so far !!

Trying something else....with X9 and CPU 4.0

When I use 4.0 I only have to use Vcore 1.328...which gives LOAD max 58C
With 4.2 I have to use 1.43, which gives LOAD max 68C

With Multiplier 9, I can get my memory at 444.5 and 4-4-4-10-1T ...seems stable have to do more tests !!

Find out with one of my favourite race-games GT Legends:

Only CPU 4.2 and memory at default 61FPS at the start of a race.
CPU 4.0 and memory like above 72FPS..so eleven frames more

So overclocked RAM seems to have a big influence on my race-games FPS.

Hans

I'd read the threads here and here...

With the imminent release of new products from ATi and nVidia it would be good to read up what both companies will have to offer.
From what I've seen we'll have two very different ideas on what constitutes a next-gen, high end card.
It will be very interesting, I think.

Nice overclock. I doubt I'll pursue one as aggressive as yours once I get the new game machine built but I hope to achieve one that's fairly respectable.
