Both. The idea is to make sure that the memory is not limiting you when you try to find the maximum cpu overclock.

Well, that sounds like the error is due to the cpu overclock, but follow the procedure I described (optimizing the cpu first, then raising the memory) to be sure.

I just thought of another possibly important point. Have you set your PCI-E clock rate to 100 MHz in the bios? If not, you should. If it is set to default or auto, when you raise the fsb rate the PCI-E rate might be going up with it, which could mean that the PCI-E bus or the video card would limit you. Perhaps an increased PCI-E rate is why your fps went up so much in one of your experiments, when you increased the fsb. I'd suggest setting it manually to 100 MHz, which is the rate it would default to without overclocking, at least until you have settled on cpu/memory/fsb timings. Then try to increase it to see if it helps your fps.

Re: E8500 overclock result..so far !!

PCI-E clock rate >> is 100 MHZ. don't have a AUTO-setting.
What about the HT multiplier (BIOS) is set at X5.

I will first see what the CPU can do as you described, and with how much Vcore and how high the TEMPS are

Thanks !!

Hans.

Re: E8500 overclock result..so far !!

2 hours and 4 min. LARGE FFT's...NO ERRORS

With CPU 4.1 (x9) ...MEM 5-5-5-15-2T and running 800mhz.

Needed more Vcore ofcourse >> 1.39 BIOS

MAX TEMP with ROOM/TEMP 23C ....got max in REAL/TEMP >> 62C

I did not read everything about that Vdrop to be honest, but saw this:
BIOS 1.39 >> CPU-z IDLE it gave 1.400 and LOAD first 1.384 and after an hour or so it gave 1.376V

Still fine ???? ...worth to try 4.2 ??

Hans.

Re: E8500 overclock result..so far !!

That all sounds great! You could try 4.2, and if you get errors go back to 4.1 and declare victory! But then try to raise the PCI-E rate a little and see if it helps your fps.

Re: E8500 overclock result..so far !!

Hi Al,

So if I get errors...1.40 Vcore BIOS or better not

Hans

PS: still strange...when using LOAD you get less Vcore, normally you would think the other way round if you know what I mean.

The Intel datasheet lists 1.45V as the absolute maximum rating. I would want to allow some margin relative to that. 1.4 is probably ok if the temps are still ok, but my own preference would be to allow a little more margin than that.

See my earlier post about vdroop -- vcore drops down under load because the much higher currents that the cpu draws under load produce a larger voltage loss through the small stray resistances in the path between the voltage regulator and the cpu.

1.39 Vcore BIOS with 4.2...error in two seconds

try 1.400 Vcore

Re: E8500 overclock result..so far !!

BIOS..Vcore numbers are green till 1.45 Vcore...1.46 is in RED.

So you are right, again

Hans.

Re: E8500 overclock result..so far !!

Make sure it's not your memory that's limiting you. Either by running Memtest86+ or by slowing the memory clock rate down.

Re: E8500 overclock result..so far !!

1 hour and 54 min. 1 error

With CPU 4.2 and 1.42 BIOS, CPU-z load 1.416

But what I don't like I think...MAX TEMPS this time 67C !!!!!!!!

1.39 or 1.42 Vcore BIOS seems to make a lot of difference on air

CPU better stay with 4.1 I think ...after all 4.1 with 1.39 Vcore isn't that bad.

Hans.

Agreed! Temps go up very rapidly as voltage is increased. Very nice results at 4.1!

Re: E8500 overclock result..so far !!

Working on the memory now

CPU 4.1 (Vcore 1.39) ...should be stable, see above.

I just did MEMTEST for 1 hour and 13 min...no errors with:

4-4-4-10-1T (2.275V and 1:1)) running 455.5 (frequency) ..not bad

But I am afraid I will get errors with PRIME BLEND

Hans.

Re: E8500 overclock result..so far !!

Just did a 3dmark 05 test, first test..PC was freezing.

After setting the FSB volt at 1.4 no freezes anymore
