have p4 2.53 need mobo/ram

i have rescued a working p4 2.53 cpu from a dead pc which was stripped out...and id like to know my best bet for mobo/ram...i know this cpu rates as 533mh fsb...am i right that any chipset from i850e will work?...i believe rdram was recommended for this cpu...but would ddr be good...perhaps dual channel 800mhz?pc 3200?..i will use this to build a gaming pc perhaps low level overclock.
i have a spare graphics card agp..geforce 6800.any advice welcome.

Smile P4p800

Maybe you should try out P4P800 and Corsair value select memory.Low cost and it works fine.I used a P4 2.53 before i got a used Northwood. And it worked great for me.

I would stay away from any i850 motherboards you find. I would look for any 865 or 875 based motherboards for the cpu and graphics cards.

Yep, it'll work with a 850 (and work much better I'm finding). But it'll work good in the 865 and 875 with DDR -- yes, PC3200 works in the 865, but at the 333mhz range by default (getting a little less memory bandwidth than with PC4200 32bit).

Since the 865 boards are still around and in late production (my P4800-E Deluxe was built in September 2005), it maybe the best bet (BIOS are still being updated), and they're cheap.

Stick with name brand memory for stability (since this will be a game rig with slight O/Cing).

Yes by default the motherboard will default the ram to run in synch with the FSB, although that can be changed. Also something to consider is that DDR is nearly half the price of RDRAM, while DDR is more overclocking friendly.

True, but I'm finding the 850e/533mhz/32bit RDRAM sweeter on bandwidth without O/Cing, than 865/533mhz/PC3200 with slight O/Cing. Little disappointed that even with a gig of memory now (I had only 256MB on the P4T533-R, which it the pagefile a lot), this new 865 doesn't push anymore than I got from the 850 with 1/4 the memory.

The 850e was specially tuned for the 533mhz processor/32bit memory, which can explain why it worked good right out of the box, despite the bad latency of the memory.

I guess for those not looking to fuss with settings, the 850 will do (good for those wanting to build a "set-it-and-leave-it" box). For those wanting to tinker, 865/875 is the better route.

thanks for good advice..i am pricing and reading up on 865pe boards and will run ddr dual channel...which is my next question...i see i can get ddr400 twin modules with cl2 timings...or ddr500 for not much more money...which is the best bet for moderate overclocking...higher speed or better timings?and will ddr500 work in a ddr400 rated mobo?

To answer your question yes they will work, but unless that 533MHz cpu overclocks crazier than any other cpu out there you will not need DDR500. Some nice DDR400 with CAS of 2 will do nicely.

Stick with PC3200 @ 2-2-2-2. 533mhz processors don't overclock by much, and it's overclocking to begin with using PC3200 (it's native memory is RDRAM-800/1066mhz or PC2700).

ok thanks...so i get my 800fsb mobo and ddr400at cl2 timings and select bios cpu frequency at 133mhz multiplier..im then running the mobo and ram at 533mhz fsb before i try o/clocks....i believe i dont get hyperthreading with this cpu...so am i better with 1 stick of ram,or a pair?

It is more advantageous to run the ram in synch with the FSB (1:1). So if you get DDR400 and run it at 1:1 with the FSB the ram will be running at 133MHz or 266MHz DDR. The reason for getting DDR400 is that if you overclock the cpu your ram will not be the limiting factor. In order to run dual channel you will need 2 matched sticks. And I would advise to run dual channel.

thanks for reply..good advice and noted...i will get paired ddr run at 1:1..i just need to know how to set the agp in bios as i have a agp geforce 6800...is this ok at default settings or do i need to manually limit the bus speed?

If you have pretty much any 865 motherboard, the BIOS has either locked the AGP/PCI bus or has the option to lock it. On all Asus motherboards that I have seen the bus is automatically locked for you.

A really good mobo for it is the Asus P4GPL-X I use it and it has great overclocking abilities. Very stable board and very cheap too.
