It's not that much more for the Q9450 though. Ah well, we'll see. And they have the same 95W TDP. Hmmm...

All of the 45 nm quads are spec'd at 95W, except for the two QX Extreme Edition parts which are 130 and 136W. And all of the 45 nm duals are spec'd at 65W. Interesting, but I'm not sure exactly what to make of it.

I've been to and fro about AMD vs. Intel, but I'm thinking of an Intel rig currently. Mostly because the difference in price isn't that big and, well, I can afford it these days. And I like the idea of a 45nm chip.

This is what I've poked together as a probable rig right now.

Asus P5E-VM HDMI
Intel Core 2 Quad 9300
4GB of Corsair PC2-6400 CL5 bog standard memory
2x Samsung F1 750GB
Antec SOLO (a black P150 with factory HDD suspension)
Corsair 450W PSU

(It's a mATX card, but I could fit a sound card and a graphics card on it if need be, I can't see myself needing expansion beyond that.) I intend on using the G35 chipset graphics since I don't game, and it will work well enough with Vista should I feel like using that. If it just blows all over the place, a cheap ATi card will be purchased, we're talking $100 tops (a 3840 or something). I have a Matrox G400 currently (8 years running) and believe me, I don't need much more.

In the coming months I will get me a monitor that will match the total cost of the rest of the system, the 24" BENQ FP241W (which in the reviews I've read runs circles around even the latest 24" Dell and any 24" Samsung).

Thoughts, other suggestions? I still intend to spend as little as possible.
Holy cows!!

CONGRATS!!

Edit: I just realized that I didn't have anything productive to say. I was just so excited when I read you were getting a new rig, I was dumbfounded.

I really dont have any advice for you, but enjoy it. To know so much about computers, you certainly have one of the oldest computers of any computer nerd I know

Congrats kONGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still want to put back together my cusl2-c bp!!! (need a case for it)

Go for the Q9450 !!!!!!!!!!!

I prefer to use RAID or enterprise class hard drives. So it'll be RE2 drives or the new RE3 drives for me. (and whispers the word VelociRaptor)

Why do we call computers "rigs"?

Brian, since you have built several systems based on this mobo, do you have any experience using the hdmi for video and sound ?

No, no experience. I wanted to build systems for friends/family/customers with a motherboard that "did it all" and this was the perfect choice. But all of the computers I have built with this board used the onboard G35 graphics (with the DVI adapter) and the onboard Realtek High-Definition audio.

Re: hold on to your lug nuts, it's time for an overhaul

Brian, did you notice any weirdness with getting into the BIOS using the DVI-on-HDMI connector? I read something the other day that the HDMI only started displaying stuff after POST. (Any monitor I'm looking at will have the ability to toggle between inputs, so I can hook up the VGA should need be, but I really don't want to).

Re: hold on to your lug nuts, it's time for an overhaul

Using the P5N-E HDMI with the HDMI output, I was getting no video signal.
I discovered that HDMI was not turned on by default but the DVI connector was.
I needed the move two large jumper blocks over to enable HDMI.

Re: hold on to your lug nuts, it's time for an overhaul

The behavior I read about was that the HDMI did indeed emit video, but only after the thing POSTed.

(Edit: also, whoever designed the Asus download site should be repeatedly punched in the face with something pointy.)

Yes, I had that weirdness happen on the very first board for some reason! So I switched to the VGA connector, everything worked fine, set up the BIOS, installed Windows/updated the BIOS (using EZ Flash 2)/installed all apps, etc and then when all the work was done, switched it to the DVI-on-HDMI connector and everything was shiny after that. And for all the subsequent systems I built that were using the onboard G35 graphics, I did it that way. In other words, I didn't even bother checking to see if that workaround was necessary (and for all I know it wasn't). It could have just been a bug in an early board or BIOS revision but I always just go with what works.

And for my own system, I went with a discreet ATI video card from the start so I had no reason to expect or experience any weirdness.

Re: hold on to your lug nuts, it's time for an overhaul

I've done some checking around and read about lots of people that have the Q9300 running on the P5E-VM, so I think it'll be fine (you can always set multipliers and whatnot manually if need be). Guessing a BIOS update is coming, would make absolutely no sense whatsoever with no Q9300 support when there is support for the Q9450 for example.

A bit torn on the RAID thing though. A 4-port PCIe x1 card isn't too steep in terms of money. Could be nicer with drivers and such also, but I dunno. Suggestions?
