Re: Looking for a Intel Mobo to run my existing dual core Pentium D 3.4 Ghz processor

Hi Ctal > Its fantastic to know you work on Vegas too. I work on Vegas too. For about 3 years now. I use vegas 7.0a + dvd arch 4.0 for authoring. Tried many other NLEs like avid etc and gave up for their sluggishness. Especially Premier Pro. LOL. Vegas is rock solid and runs even on marginally powered systems. Hmmm, i should have known your from the same club. Pleasant surprise. I regularly work on HDV (.m2t) and its excellent. I get real time preview playback even with color correction filters on. But raptors are much superior to normal SATAs if im right ? They are also difficult to find in my country.

Ill do the math and report the bitrate values to you in an hour or so. Thanks.

Re: Looking for a Intel Mobo to run my existing dual core Pentium D 3.4 Ghz processor

Great minds think alike!

I started with EditStudio, a pretty good consumer-grade program, then went to Vegas 6 a few years ago, then recently to Vegas 8. I use DVD Lab Pro for DVD authoring. Vegas 8 came with DVD Architect, so I have that, but I haven't taken the time to get to learn it because DVD Lab does the job nicely for me.

Yes, for those who don't require rendering on-the-fly in real time, Vegas seems to offer the best of all worlds -- functionality, performance, stability, user friendliness, a wonderful gui, the ability to run on just about any Windows system, as you said, and even the lowest cost among the competition. Really amazing.

The 10,000 rpm Raptors are only superior in terms of access (seek) time, which is mainly relevant to the system ("c") drive. The recent large capacity 7200 rpm sata drives are actually superior in terms of sustained transfer rates, mainly because they are later generation technology with higher data density. Question about WD Raptor Replacements

Ctal > The video files are 1280x720p, 12secs, uncompressed avi, 849mb.
The other one is 1920x1080p, 12secs, uncompressed avi, 1.86gb.
Both are from the same source video. The former runs smoothly. The latter stutters.

Re: Looking for a Intel Mobo to run my existing dual core Pentium D 3.4 Ghz processor

So the two data rates are 71 MB/sec, and 155 MB/sec. Awesome! As you know, standard definition DV is only about 3.3 MB/sec.

As you've read in the other thread I referenced, 71 MB/sec is within the sustained transfer rate capability of a typical recent high capacity 7200 rpm sata drive, although it is fairly demanding (and will be beyond the capability of those drives if the file or parts of the file are located near the end of the drive -- make sure the drive is not too full and is properly defragmented). 155 MB/sec is well beyond the capability of any single desktop hard-drive, as far as I am aware. I suspect that a RAID 0 array of two WD640's, or two of the new 300 gB WD Raptors, would be just about the only way to handle that successfully (the 640's being a far less expensive approach than the Raptors). And you would need a good RAID controller as well, not one that relies on the cpu to any significant extent, and not one that utilizes the pci bus. I'm not particularly knowledgeable in that area; perhaps you could ask on the Vegas forum how other people working in hi def approach this issue.

Regards,

Ctal > So given my processor and ram etc (3 Ghz Core 2 Duo / 2 Gb Ram ) is this Bitrate of 71 MB/sec for uncompressed video, good performance ? Or nominal performance.

Most hard drives could not handle that data rate smoothly if the file or parts of the file were located towards the end of the drive. The cpu, memory, etc. are doing what they should, namely not being limiting factors. You may want to run HD Tune to get some good benchmark information on your hard drives.
