Re: My new game machine...

So, seeing as how the TJ Max figure is 85c and my core distance readings are 46/46 (along with temps at 39c/39c) we're looking pretty good.

Yes, and as I said to Hans it would probably read considerably lower than that if you did the calibration procedure described in the Realtemp writeup.

Re: My new game machine...

Copy that.
I'll be tinkering quite a bit with my new system. I'm usually a set-it-and-forget-it user (Intel-built boards) but it would be a shame to waste all those BIOS options those Taiwanese Poindexter's put in there.

I'm surprised, even with loosened timings and a voltage increase, that your memory could run at such a fast clock rate.

Assuming a target overclock for your E8500 of 4.2gHz, your fsb would be 4.2/9.5 = 442MHz. For a 1:1 memory-to-fsb clock ratio, that would mean the memory would be running at 442 x 2 = DDR2-884. If your bios provides a 5:4 memory-to-fsb ratio (= 4:5 fsb-to-memory), that would be just about perfect for DDR2-1066 (884 x 5/4 = 1105).

Thanks for your time...looks interesting, see what I can do

Orthos no errors for an hour...with 4.2 but I need 1.43 Vcore BIOS to run this, will try lowering the Vcore.

Re: My new game machine...

The calibration procedure probably won't affect the 66degC too much. It mainly affects idle temps, or load temps that are lower (as a result of lower voltage or a lower overclock). Lowering the voltage should bring that down significantly.

That's really good if it stays stable under load, and is also stable with Memtest86+.

Two comments, however:

-- The E8500 has a multiplier of 9.5, not 9 (under load, so that Speedstep is out of the picture). The E8400 has a multiplier of 9.

-- Memory at 583.5 corresponds to DDR2-1167. I'm very surprised that your DDR2-667 can do that, even with the relaxed timings. If you are planning to get new memory, as I suggested earlier I would go with a DDR2-1066 or similar, preferably one that overclocks well (see the user comments at NewEgg on whichever memories you are considering, where people often provide comments on the overclocks they achieved).

I wouldn't say that you have to, but if you don't you are losing some of your potential overclock. Are you using the latest CPU-Z? Earlier versions might not read it correctly. Is your bios up to date, considering that the E8xxx's were only introduced in January?

Well, maybe if it is sometimes indicating 9.5, it's ok. I don't know why it would fluctuate, though. Maybe it's a quirk of cpu-z when dealing with fractional multipliers.

Re: My new game machine...

When I try 4.2/9.5...memory 1:1 no problem.

mem 884 ..this is with the LINKED and SYNCED BIOS setting.

But with UNLINKED...I can't get my memory right

Most case I have to reset my BIOS again.
