Re: My new game machine...

Something else, interesting to share I think.

In CPU-z under load I get 1.416 Vcore....Idle I get 1.432

BIOS 1.42

Full of surprises this E8500

Hans.

Hans.
I'd expect that. Vcore normally drops down somewhat under load, the amount depending on the design of the mobo. Much larger currents are flowing from the voltage regulators to the cpu under load compared to at idle. V = I x R; R (resistance of the path though the mobo, socket pins, etc., plus the source impedance of the voltage regulator) is very small but is not zero; multiply that by a large I (current) and you get the 16 mv voltage drop, which is about what I saw on my mobo with an E8400. Its sometimes referred to as Vdroop.

Re: My new game machine...

We've set next weekend aside to build the new game machine...I just picked up the last part yesterday. A Zalman CNPS9700 HSF.

Re: My new game machine...

Only thing is we have to remove the Crazy Cool copper backing on the dark side of the X48-DQ6. Apparently it takes up the screw holes you need to mount the Zalman (or any other after market HSF of choice).

I am using a CNPS9700 LED from Zalman...normal you a kind of standard cooler with the CPU package.

Good choice ??

Testing info..with ORTHOS 1 hour stable testing:
CPU 4.2 with mem 1:1 and 4-4-4-12-1t....using 1.400 Vcore in my BIOS.
Highest TEMP >> 64C
Tried latest PRIME..got an error one core, other one did still run after 47 MIN.
Used the BLEND test.

Shall I first try to get 4.2 stable with the lowest Vcore ??...maybe my MEM is giving the error in PRIME !!??

Hans

Mrs. TQ and I have been using Zalman's for our last few builds. We've been very pleased with them.
We've found them to run significantly cooler than the stock HSF's. Money well spent.

Re: My new game machine...

TQ, I'm using the Thermaltake Silent 775D cpu cooler on my Core 2 Duo E6600. I've noticed that my cpu is a lot cooler with it, than with the Intel cpu cooler.

Yes, some people complained about that in the user comments at NewEgg, on the recent Gigabyte boards. Apparently it's just a minor inconvenience. I went with the OCZ Vendetta 2, which is among a small minority of big coolers that attach to LGA775 using the standard Intel arrangement that mounts purely from the front. However, that means dealing with those ridiculous push-pins, which are very hard to insert and cause the board to flex worrisomely during installation.

Yes, it could be your memory. The proper way to find the optimal overclock is to temporarily lower the memory clock rate to a very low setting, and relax the memory timings to very slow settings. Then find the maximum cpu/fsb speed that is stable with Prime 95 or equivalent. Then raise the memory clock rate and tighten the memory timings as much as possible, testing with Memtest86+. Then do a re-test with Prime 95.

Regards,
-- Al

Re: My new game machine...

Also, P (power, in watts) = I x V.

Both formulas assume we are only dealing with resistive circuit elements, without significant capacitance or inductance.

The interesting thing is how awesome the currents are into a modern cpu at full load. The 45nm dual cores have a TDP (thermal design power) of 65W if I recall correctly. Divide 65W by the power supply voltage (around 1.25 volts), and you get 52 amps! Awesome. Think of your household circuit breakers, that are rated at 15 or 20 amps.

And the earlier 65 nm and 90 nm cpu's were much higher than that. Not to mention quad cores!

Regards,
-- Al
