Re: My new game machine...

It's done, and except for a bad moment when we thought we had a defective motherboard - it wasn't booting from the DVD - the build was a success.
Turns out the Ideazon USB gaming keyboard (the lovely and cool Merc Stealth) was the culprit. As soon as I plugged in an old PS/2 clatterer we were on our way to config town.
(Note to board makers: don't ditch those legacy PS/2 ports, ever! )

Once that little scare was out of the way we got Vista Business64 installed, updated and I did a little tweaking of the OS.

The CPU is running at its default of 3.0. I haven't gone into the BIOS except to poke around a bit and to force the DVD to the first of the line in the boot sequence, but it's working.

One little weirdness...it's either the Zalman or the GTX's cooling fan, but one or the other is running at a screamingly loud rate. I need to crack the case to see which one it is but it's very noticeable. I would have done it yesterday but after building two machines we were pretty beat and decided to drink instead. I kept to my rule that are three things one never does while drinking: Drive, shoot and work on computers.

Oh, a shout out to Zalman: they now ship with their HSF's a bottle of cooling paste complete with a brush applicator. Nice. No more gooey finger tips.

Re: My new game machine...

Outstanding!

The recent Asus boards have done away with the PS/2 mouse port, although they still have a PS/2 keyboard port. The recent Gigabyte's have both.

Re: My new game machine...

I'd be in there right now installing the tools I need for diagnostics and benchmarking, but my nephew's in there on the sleeper sofa.

I need to post the various speeds at which everything is running, but that unconscious teenager is in the way...which reminds me...I've got to get his OS loaded.

Re: My new game machine...

But now it's like painting your masterpiece...a series of brush strokes and you can see the Mona Lisa on your heat spreader.
Unless you prefer Dali, but that would mean you've got paste dripping down its sides...

After my last computer build (corrupted a SATA drive), I'm thinking I'd enjoy it much more if I did drink
