Question

hi guys . I am new here and at overclocking. Today (now actually) wanted to o/c my cpu but didnt used any additional cooling than the standard FAN . I got my 600e to 702. I got a cusl2 offcourse . I ran asus probe and the cpu reaches 45c ...when its idle it goes to 35..is that good?. Also every 3 seconds i get a very annoying busy cursor. Can u please help me get rid of it?

Your temperature seems to be okay. Use some software cooling like RAIN or the one that comes with the ASUS probe. It might help lower the temperature down few degrees. Go for good cooling if you intend to overclock because heat is the opposing force for o/c.

About your busy cursor, make sure that no program is loaded and working in the background.

Reset my pc, press del, go into that wonderfull and SIMPLE asus bios, went to cpu.... highlighted the 600mhz line..pressed the plus key till it gets to 702 !
that was simple!!!
Well the mobo made some changes on some oither things but i dont care. if u can explain what those other things are that would be nice

Exclamation OC....

You need to have great cooling to really get it up to par. I started to overclock too early and had terrible crashes.
I am currently running a P3 667@925 and I keep bumping it up a little each day. Get rid of the stock HSF, remove the mobo, get underneath and release the pins of the greenie, put some Artic Silver of anything you like under it, add a fan to the greenie, purchase a really good HSF and you will be able to up it to as fast as that thing will do! I have read of some folks getting over the GHZ limit with that same CPU!! Have you got a good monitor? MotherBoardMonitor 5.03 is the best. Can't trust the Probe! Also, you can get CPUidle software to help cool it down. I found the CPUidle ver.3.0 demo a while ago and it has worked great! I can send you a copy if you can not find it. It is a demo that doesn't sxpire the way the newest version does. You can see my results under http://cusl2.efront.com/vbulletin/sh...hp?threadid=25
Also look at my website for anything that may help you.

one of the best programs to test your machine for stability is 3DMark2000. It will stress your cpu and video card. I haven't got the link for the download at this time, but I'm certain many have.
Another good program is Prime95 and the link is:

Wink

Hi Psit,
Yes, your temp is right for stock HSF.But give a little push to @800-It should be okay.My 600E cA2(stepping one/use WCPUID or Intel`s cpuid for dos to verify) hit @840 with stock HSF @894 Global Win FKP32(now there are better models) and @990 cold-watercooled 72W peltier.Ohh, it boots in winMe @1008 but gives errors.
I don`t try up any more as it`s not worth the trouble!?(Going to buy 1000 cC0 anyway).

Try setting Vcore at 1.70V(if you have cA2-cB0) 1.75V(cC0) or even more to get stable at a semi-stable speed.

If you are a begginer at OC don`t mess with peltiers/watercooling as you might get in other troubles(power supplies-pumps-condesation-hoses-etc.)Thats the difficult part.
OC is easy when you lower cpu temp.

Sorry for double posting.
@840 1.65V stock HSF 41C full load
@872 1.65V Global win 38C full load
@894 1.75V Global win 41C full load
@942 1.75V water peltier 20-22C full load
@990 1.90V coldwater peltier 11C full load (need that low temp)
@1008 1.95V coldwater peltier (Doesn`t give errors below 10C )
Conclusion is that you get as much Mhz as the temp is dropping(always there`s a limit!)

Enjoy your CUSL2 mobo as it has it all, exept that other also don`t(SCSI,FIREWIRE).
PS.SCSI drives are far faster/no cpu usage,but look at the prices!

866EB@1008 - Stock heatsink with 25cfm fan and Artic Silver heatsink compound. mem=453/535

The stock heatsink is not the problem. The problem is thermal pads, which need to be replaced with a good thermal compound, and a dinky fan that only moves air at about 7cfm. For 13 bucks you can easily replace the fan with a 25cfm fan and keep the P3 cool enough.

Stressed CPU = 40C max
Idle CPU = 31C max

Don't forget that to OC, in BIOS, you set 'CPU Internal Freq' to MANUAL; leave FSB:SDRAM:PCI Freq Ratio at 133:133:33 and play with FSB:SDRAM:PCI Freq (MHZ). I presently have mine set for 155:155:38. It's best to start off slowly, say around 140:140:35 and keep an eye on the CPU temp; if the CPU temp gets much over 45C, then you need some additional cooling before you go any higher with OC'ing. Most guru's here prefer the Alpha hsf.
