SATA opticals!?!

From what I understand, there is no advantage to running an optical drive with a SATA connection. EIDE opticals run with the same performance as a SATA optical drive.

I'd rather run 6 SATA hard drives than sacrafice a SATA connection to something that does not need one.

Do you have other plans for the EIDE connector on your motherboard?

Re: new system build

I bailed on dual videocards, having had a bad expierence on an ATI chipset board, and on an Nvidia 680i chipset board, I originally had for SLI.

Never failed, everytime I strayed from an Intel chipset motherboard, I've had problems off and on.

I'm not a fan of dual videocards anymore, and I do a lot of gaming.

I'm only running SATA optical drives because 1) I'm only going to be using 1 500GB HD at the moment---if I ever decided to use more then one HD then I would definitely use my SATA ports for the HD over the optical drives 2) a little neater using SATA cables

the Maximus Formula board comes with 4 SATA connections...so I'll be using 3 of them with one to spare

yeah Intel chipsets are usually very solid and stable...I'm glad to be back with Intel after so many years with AMD...also this is my first Nvidia card since the GeForce 3...I have the X1900XT now and before that I had the 9800 Pro...hopefully Intel + Nvidia is a good match

I played around of Battle For Middle Earth 2, and I had no problems with the game on my 8800GTS.

Second 8800GTS is in it's box in the closet.

I'm back!!...got my new system up and running and it's humming along beautifully!!!...had 1 annoying part of the build which aggravated me to no end and it was a total mistake by the ASUS design team...but once I figured it out everything is a beauty!!...I'll be back later today to update the install etc

real quickly in one word the case is nearly 'perfect'...more of a server type case but I love it...the case comes with 6 fans and they are ultra quiet (not silent) but very low noise...I have them all running right now at 90-100% (BIOS controlled) just to test the noise levels and they are excellent...seems like one of the fans is making more noise then the others (the rear exhaust) so maybe I can go back in and find out why soon to make it even quieter

I took out 1 fan from the upper hard drive cage and attached that to the top panel as an exhaust blowhole...I'm a big fan of top blowholes as heat naturally rises so having a natural vent on the top of any case is a must have feature for me

lowering the fan speeds makes them sound even better---most people do not need 6 fans so setting 2 of them at 50% or less would be fine and still do an excellent job of cooling

the slight negatives of the case are 1)the mothboard tray is not able to hold any expansion slots so it is not a 'true' mobo tray as it slides off from the side of the case instead of from the rear, 2)doesn't come with the blowhole top panel---you have to buy that panel separately, 3)case doesn't come with an external 3.5" drive bay, so I had to purchase a 5.25 to 3.5 adapter to fit my floppy (yes I still use a floppy drive )

I showed a few people my system and they all loved the case and wanted to know where to purchase it

I'll be back later to discuss further details...

Re: new system build

So you had to buy a different top? Where'd you get that?

Performance PCs has a model that Newegg doesn't, which includes a windowed side panel with extra 120mm fan in the door. But I've yet to see anything about a vented top. (BTW, the price for the stock A70 is about $30 less at P-PCs, but the shipping charge eliminates that difference.)

I could easily cut a 120mm hole in the top, but I am always nervous about that on a new case...

I think Hank only charges $10 for a 120mm hole, its a no brainer for me!!!

you could buy the top panel separately--the model # is T-70 (the below link is from the Lian Li website for the top panel for the T-71 which fits the PC-A71 case---identical to the PC-A70 except the A71 has a front door)

Lian Li Industrial Co., Ltd.

Lian Li Industrial Co., Ltd.

I bought the case from Performance-PCS because they allow you to customize everything...I bought the case from them with the special top panel and the 5.25 to 3.5 floppy adapter installed...total came out to $295 with shipping...if you buy the top panel separately it will run about $40 so it's better to buy it pre-installed

Lian Li PC-A70B Black Aluminum Full Tower Case Products Model: PC-A70B [PC-A70B] : Performance-PCs.com, ... sleeve it and they will come

**go all the way to the bottom of that link to see all the customization options available
