As far as pricing the following was posted on X-bit labs a while back. I sure hope it's correct. The 2.40 looks pretty appealing.

The family of Intel Conroe processors will initially consist of four models: E6700, E6600, E6400 and E6300 that will operate 2.67GHz, 2.40GHz, 2.13GHz and 1.86GHz, respectively. The E6700 and E6600 models will sport 4MB unified L2 cache, whereas the E6400 and E6300 will have 2MB unified level-two cache. Pricing of the parts is expected to be quite aggressive: $529, $315, $240 and $210, according to some sources. In the Q4 2006 the maker will also add the model E6800 that works at 2.93GHz and features 1066MHz bus along with 4MB cache.

Here's some fresh prices.

E6700 $531
E6600 $315
E6400 $240
E6300 $210

At the same time Conroe appears at the prices above the price of the 960 will be $315 after having been available starting in April for $530. Cheap, cheap, cheap. Performance per dollar just doubled.

E6600 looks like where it's at, as far as dollar per performance. Of course I can't say that without benchmarking to back it up.

I'm kind of disappointed that the lowest one is just 30 dollars less than the second lowest; it'd be nice to start around $180. Very Intel thing to do, though, they've always priced their lowest parts just below their midrange.

That's an understatement. Torn between getting a mini upgrade to crunch, or sit out until May to go dual core.

Decisions, decisions, decisions.

It is most annoying not knowing for certain which chipsets are going to support future CPU's and which are not.
There is plenty of speculation around about the 945 & 975 chipsets.
It looks like a given that the 915 & 925 aren't going to support things.

However speculation doesn't seem to cover the 955 chipset.
Now I know you don't buy motherboards thinking of future upgrades these days but I really was hoping for a little bit of life on this board.
I went for the 955 specifically over the 925.
I've got DDR2 667 Memory (2x 1GB modules) in place and had fingers crossed than Conroe would nicely replace my existing 3.2Ghz (640) CPU.

However it would appear that nobody is willing to really make any kind of guess on the 955 chipset.
Well except those that say not even the 975 will work...

Same situation for me. 3 Gigs of DDR2 667 and using the 3.0Ghz (830) proc but I'm using the 955 chipset. Plus, I'm ticked that the 830 does not allow me to use VMware like I wanted to and would have to get the 9xx to have it. Yet my AMD laptop can already do what I need. Very frustrating the way Intel is doing certain things with boards and proc setups. If I have to purchase board+proc then I will probably just let this 830 system run for the next 2 years because I'm tired of providing profit to Intel at an expense of 6 month upgrades.

I read somewhere that the D955XBK will support Conroe.

Sure hope so. Something about the 955XBK's ability to handle Intel's high wattage procs gives me tranquility to handling the less wattage eating Conroe easily.

Just think of the money saved with a lower watt proc. It can buy more hardware.

Aww man now I want a Conroe system, but that'll need a new motherboard. Either way I'm too poor.

I'm sitting on my coin for a while. I was going to buy an Opteron 165 with an ASUS A8N32-SLI to replace my Abit AA8 DuraMax, but I'll hang in there and see.

Holy smokes, a 3GHz Yonah is whoopin' the chedder outta a OC 3.3GHz AMD FX-60

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=30426

Ouch!!!

If Yonah => Robin
then Conroe => Batman

Any comments on this Intel_User or are you speechless
Very funny. I always had high hopes for Core Duo(aka Yonah) and reviewers always benchmarked it wrong, making it look bad than its supposed to be .

Intel 945 chipset supports 1066MHz FSB, yet it doesn't have any CPUs supported that runs at 1066MHz FSB: http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/945g/index.htm

I wonder if it has to do with Conroe. I'll probably get G965 since the integrated graphics core so far looks so sweet.

Intel has indicated that Conroe will work in existing 975X motherboards, though a BIOS update will be needed. Intel will also be shipping the 965 Express chipset, which will support up to DDR2/800. Curiously, there are no plans to support DDR2/800 on the 975X. The good news in all this is that Conroe will chew up less power than past Intel desktop CPUs, so there's no need to scale up the voltage regulator section on the board. "

I mentioned it before that if the D965 boards have Intel Advanced Audio and you can get one without the onboard graphics GPU then it would be a great board to get IMO. It wouldn't have the fancy VR heat sinks or be Crossfire capable or have as good an OC potential but that is OK with a lot of folks I bet.
I heard that Conroe's current requirements are so low that existing motherboards can't run it. Last time I remember with Prescott is that it couldn't run on 865/875 boards because current requirements were too high, what's up with that??

Well at IDF Intel used a D975XBX on a ES6600 I believe. The D975XBX provides the strongest CPU power supply of any Intel board so if it was true it would happen with that board.

So when does everybody think the Conroe EE chip will appear in relation to the other Conroe chips? I have a feeling that Intel will debut this chip first just to make a statement. If not with the initial chips like the 2.67GHz Conroe then very shortly after. I'm guessing a month after, no later. Anybody have an opinion on this? The soonest I could pick up an Intel 965EE would be 4-15, maybe later even. 3mos later and the Conroe EE might be out. Why bother?
