| System built up from: Northwood 2.8 fsb533. Running on asus p4s800d-e dlx. Together with kingston kvr333x64c25/1G (pc333) in dual channel mode. I don't need any replacement for this system yet. It meets my current requirements very well. But my current problem is just the cpu. POST says "system failed cpu test" - i guess it sounds like "... cpu ..." not like "... vga...". The post voice error code messages don't sound well/clearly. So I have to purchase new cpu. My local stores offer - Pentium 4 2.8 GHz ( 533 MHz ) Northwood - Pentium 4 3.0 GHz ( 800 MHz ) Prescott No more choices available. What do you recommend ? To take the 533 one again, or to change to the 800 one ? Will my PC333 ram run with fsb800 ? The existing RAM should stay unreplaced. That's the urgent case. Please give your hints asap. I need this system is running again asap as well. Thanks. |

| Re: Replacement for Pentium 4 fsb533 northwood since you needed it asap i googled it and the problems that i saw were 1. the processor 2. motherboard if possible why not try to get your processor in to another motherboard and check if the thing is the processor fault or the motherboards and one thing i noticed that there were many ppl having the same thing but the problem was the Asus motherboard that you have so i am guessing that the motherboard might be the case here too so just check that out plz

Turn system off and unplug from wall. Try to clear the bios on the motherboard. 1 - Remove the battery from the motherboard 2 - Move the cmos jumper to clear for about 15 seconds 3 - Put the jumper back to original position 4 - Put the battery back in 5 - Power up and set bios setting if required

| Re: Replacement for Pentium 4 fsb533 northwood Sorry for double post. First I have answered an existing thread. After that I realized that description of my issue can disappear in lot of messages and the urgent case won't be read/processed by other forum users. Clearing cmos didn't succeed. Carried out once. Of course I will simultanously try to validate the cpu using some foreign pc. But it won't be easy task. I have to find first some friend having 478-based motherboard. Let me prepare myself to the possible causes and solutions. If cpu is broken, would you recommend to replace it with 553 one or with 800 one ? With nortwood or with prescott ? If mb is broken, what is the best replacement for mb in this case ? Repairing the system should consume minimal time, energy and financies. That means I tend to replacing the broken component only. I will avoid to build up a new system and install the os from the scratch. |

| Re: Replacement for Pentium 4 fsb533 northwood what bios? the prescott has a bigger cache, and may OC to 3.8 if you're lucky.... but i would almost think it's a motherboard issue, rather than cpu....did it just stop working suddenly, or were there errors or bsod....

Yes, I have checked my cpu on a friends pc. It is working. So you are right, the mb is faulty. Furthermore, same post error message while starting the system without cpu installed. As reported on the web by another affected p4s800d-e dlx users. I'm in discussion with Asus. The support guy promised to do internal consultation regarding this case. Unfortunately since several days no reply from there. Maybe a similar mb of other brand as a replacement. Which would be the closest one ? | |

| Re: Replacement for Pentium 4 fsb533 northwood If you really want to keep the same mobo architecture, the same os, and so on, I don't believe any processor upgrade will bring you an acceptable difference. So, I'd say: keep it like it is. But on the other side, you're ready to invest in more recent hardware while keeping the same OS (I guess it's XP), you can get nice, cheap, and efficient cpu's, mobo's, ... Remind though that if you should consider Vista, the upgrade might be more more expensive. |

| Re: Replacement for Pentium 4 fsb533 northwood because the cpu seams to be ok I'm no longer looking for its replacement. Asus proposed to try repair the board. Without any guarantee for success due to some spare components may no more be in sale. I hope this will succeed. If not I have to look for a board replacement. As similar as possible. What is the most similar board to p4s800d-e dlx ? Some review has spoken about a gigabyte one, but lan, audio and something others are of other brand. Something closer ? No time to do a revolution in system set-up. My pc has to work again as soon as possible. And with minimal efforts - work and financial ones. I'm none overclocker. System stability is only one thing which counts for me. |

But a P4p800-E(Deluxe) or the P4C800-E (Deluxe). Those boards would run a northwood or a prescott at high over clocking speeds. The P4p800 or p4c800 boards should not need a OS reinstall. Just run the Intel chipset driver as soon as the system boots and it will reconfigure your system if needed. |

| Re: Replacement for Pentium 4 fsb533 northwood I can report how finished this history. Asus agreed to repair this board against payment of about 35 Euro. They replaced some chip. I don't remember which one. Have the Asus report paper some where deep. The board is working now. However two BSOD occured two times after the repair. I don't have any memory dump. A few times windows got hangs-up short after repair - recently no more. Because it is not simple to get a replacement for this board I'm considering a backup setup for my windows. For the case this board should get broken permanently. My plan will be described in new thread. Last edited by chrizio : 11-23-2008 at 02:40 PM. |
