| Tentative Lighty-Duty Mini-ITX HTPC(Suggestions and comments are welcome) After moving to a new apartment and opting not to pick up cable TV, I've decided I need to build a small machine to stream video/audio to my bedroom. My main computers serve my living room upstairs fine, but I have no way to get my media downstairs. I decided on a mini-ITX box after seeing this mobo/CPU combo from Intel: ww.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121326 This thing is great, especially when you consider the price. It's got a single-core 1200 MHz Conroe--L based Celeron with a half-meg of L2 cache. You gotta figure it performs about on-par with a 2 GHz netburst part. I'm picking up a cheap GB stick of ram, since it'll only be running at 533 MHz anyway. It's a shame this board can't support 2GB sticks. I guess I'll be hoping for a BIOS update that allows it: ww.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144042 The case is a great little hunk of steel with 3 3.5" drive bays and a 250 watt power supply(plenty for a system whos CPU has a 19 watt thermal envelope: ww.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811154085 Lastly, I chose one of the cheapest 250GB drives, on account of it being a rare 5400 RPM SATA desktop drive. I'll only be using the machine for media, so the heat savings from the 5400 RPM drive will definitely outweigh the performance drop: ww.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152107 This is where you guys come in. I looked up some benchmarks for the board/cpu, and it does struggle a bit when playing some higher-end video. I was wondering if there is a PCI video card or a USB component that offers hardware support for video decoding and playback. I want to ensure that all video playback is as smooth as possible. I'm also open to any other suggestions, just let me know what you think of it! Today, 09:10 PM Last edited by AgentCheese : 01-19-2008 at 10:15 PM. |
