When can we expect to see Motherboards with > 4 GB RAM for 64bit OS?

When can we expect to see (Intel) motherboards which will accept more than 4 GB RAM for 64bit Operating Systems?

I'd like to know as I am keen to start experimenting with Virtualization (XenServer) and allocate RAM to each Virtual Machine as required.

Anyone knows of a Notebook which already accepts >4 GB of RAM? Preferably one which will accept max 32 GB.

Hmm, I though most enthusiast mobos already accept 8GB (2GBx4) - not that this works well in all of them.

I do know that Extreme Edition Motherboards from Intel can go to a maximum of 8GB's.

well, that is a start. I really didn't know. When is this going to be mainstream? I mean, 8GB RAM or more?

I am not interested in higher clock speeds and more cores. 2 cores or 4 cores (with Hyperthreading) is OK for me. But I want RAM, a lot of it, so I can seriously start with virtualization. A dream would come true. No dual booting, just 3 or 4 or more OSs humming at the same time. Think about XP, Vista, a Linux distro (or more), FreeBSD and more OSs as required with your favourite apps on each of the platforms.

It doesn't take an expensive "Extreme" board to get 8GB, many common consumer boards can take that much. I just ordered parts for a major upgrade on my desktop rig, and among them were an Intel DP35DP board (which is under $100) and 8GB of Mushkin RAM.

Heck, my current DP965LT board could handle that much but only at PC2-5300 speed apparently. That board is well over a year old.

There is another board that I remembered can handle 8GB's of ram, but the memory must be rated for 1.8 volts. That board is the DP35DP as S. SubZero mentioned.

Just don't go to a DDR3 motherboard, the memory will break the bank.

I'm running 8gig on a GA-EP35-DS4 board with Vista 64. It does make Vista 64 run smoother this Corsair XMS2 memory.

The Intel P45 Chipset supports 16 Gig of DDR2.

Pretty much all P35 and newer boards support 8GB.

Most newer notebooks support up to 4GB, but 32GB is a bit ridiculous.

Few years back, I was eager to try 2 or 3 OSes on my PC, but after a while, I wonder while I had to do that. The problem is that, there is only one monitor, so I always had to switch from one OS to another, which takes time.

I would like to have several PCs, each running its own OS, and thus I can see what I want. There may be some circumstances where one person have to use several PCs, several monitors, but such multi-tasks are better for movies, not for efficiency. But, that is still personal taste !!!

For me, that's a finished illusion.

As regards more RAM, makers won't make such special mobo because few would buy it. That's simply business. A super-computer may have a lot of RAM. But I wonder, for ordinary folks like us, with the exception of some particular apps or games, what applications will require us to use that much RAM?
