I have a question. I was too lazy to read the whole thread as I am sure this has been asked many times. I have a question about the internet connection. From the second post here (how to join), I need to be connected so that when I fire the console it can download a wu. Then the post says "you can go offline now". what happens if I am offline when the wu is finished... will it try to connect to the internet? are the results lost? I just need more info on this topic as I dont have a permanent internet connection.

Well, the completed WU's stay in a queue until a connection is available. When you connect, you can just stop and restart the console, or stopt and start the service, and it should just send out completed, and download a new one to work on.

I even think there is a way to auto dial and connecto to ISP when they are finished.. But not too sure how to do that..

Does anyone know how to set it up to do this? I can't find the secret!

You can use EMIII;
Go into the General settings, then check "close internet connection when F@H stops downloading"

hi,

I have installed this thing because as far as I have understood it is for a good cause but I do have several questions:

1. Is it better to have a 24/7 machine? I have that little red atom thing and when I click on full screen I am still at 0% even after 20 minutes. Tonight is not a problem because I am downloading several large files but that leads me to another question: does running other programs interfere with the effectiveness of the folding business?

2. I usually use my Avant Browser (that I downloaded and sent a donation for) because I hate pop-ups, yet since I have downloaded this folding apparatus I have 4 IE that have suddenly come to life.
They are called

a. My Folding Page.
b. Folding@home
c. Folding@home

and

d. Folding@home

If I right click to close them it says I will lose my work in progress. I somehow resent being forced to do good and would prefer to do the good I am able to do.

Well they are closed now but it was strange.

3. Is ad-aware going to make a mess of all this? or can I use it normally?

Really I would like a nice clear explanation from someone.

Thanks,

dovima

It's better if your machine is running 24/7, as it will finish a work unit faster, but it doesn't have to run all the time. Fold units vary in size and the speed they complete, some take 24 hours and others can take more than a week. Running folding should have very little or no effect on the normal operation of your computer. Just let it run and use your computer as you normally would. Welcome to team 1714!

Welcome to the team, dovima. I would suggest you to use the text console version to fold, its slighty faster and I'm sure that it won't popup and that include the GUI version. "My Folding Page" is a new feature, its a webpage with few links to your stats, team stats and project links. As for "Folding@home"...maybe you've click on buttons on the GUI client which links to the page.

I'm all signed up. I tired the first method described for starting it as a service, but it said that the command doesn't exist, this is on 2K. I installed Firedaemon, and that went quick. I have an 1800+, that should help out, huh? I leave my machine on ALL the time too....
