Computer not turning ond

My roommate cleaned out his computer last night with a can of air, and after putting it back together it wouldn't power on. I took the case back apart and unplugged and replugged everything back in. I switched power cables, went through the troubleshooting steps that HP recommends and nothing. My guess is that the switch is fried...but there is no restart button so I can't test the theory.

HP Pavillion a750y
ASUS A7V8X-LA
AMD Athlon XP 3200+
VIA KM400A chipset

If there's any other information that's needed just let me know.

Re: Computer not turning ond

Just short the two pins on the motherboard where the power switch is connected momentarily and if the PC starts you have proved you have a bad power switch.

Re: Computer not turning ond

Well I tried "shorting" the pins, but no dice. The LED on the back of the PSU is blinking, but I'm not getting anything.

Power LED's blinking on a PSU aren't usually a good thing. Did you report that symptom to HP? It's possible that the PSU has gone.

Try bypassing any power bars and the like and go directly to the wall.

The catch 22 with cleaning out a computer with compressed air is that you can lodge dust into components that can cause an electrical short. It's possible that when he was giving the PSU a good blow with the can that this happened.

Have you another PSU to try with?

Yes I did. They didn't mention anything about it.

I tried a direct connect to the wall. No luck.

I'll give it a try. I have a friend that has a spare tower laying around. SO I'll do that and see what comes of it. Thanks.

This might be useful:

HP Power Supply Troubleshooting

Quote:
If your PSU has an indicator light
  1. Indicator light should be solid and not flashing.
  2. If the HP power supply is flashing, disconnect everything inside. If the LED is still flashing, the power supply is probably bad.
  3. If the LED is completely off, then the power supply is probably bad.

Re: Computer not turning ond

Thanks. I must have overlooked that part. I was going to try another PSU, but the one I was going to use won't work. Luckily I found one for about $15. I'll have to order it later this week.
