Exclamation Loud!

The type of cooler is not the problem when it comes to noise. Its the fan. If you want a quiet HSF, stay away from the delta fan. It moves the most air but its high pitch squeel gets to some people. YS tech fans are not that loud and move a fair amount of air.

I'm using the FKP38 with the Sunon 60mm 23cfm cooler, and it's not bad. Although my case is sitting under the desk in a cabinet. I can hear it but its not obnoxious. I have an old 486 thats as loud, and doesn't more near as much air. I went from 60c under load with the intel hs, to 42c under load. I don't know that you will see much improvement over your golden orb, but I haven't seen any numbers on that particular hs. Hope that helps.

Defrag,

You might want to look @ these reviews:

http://www3.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1361&p=1

and

http://www.2cooltek.com/newsocket.html

The FOP38 sounds like a vacuum cleaner, but I think it's one of the best aircooled hsf for the $.

Regards,

Thomas

Cool Best cooler litlle noise

Hi defrag , No hard feelings about the post where you made a comment about my spelling !!!
About the cooler , i would go for the PEP66T and run the alpa's at 7 volt , they make not to much noise like that but still move a lot of air. I have the PEP myself and use it with a peltier setup. I use it with two Alpa's at 7 volts and i have not yet have a better combo as compared noise to performance! Good luck

Get an alpha pep66, with Sunom fans, verry quiet and with articsilver you might get your 800E to 133FSB.
My 800E (cb0) is stable at 133FSB with an alpha pep66 and a Sunon fan on one side and a YS-Tech fan on the other side. Max temp of 45C while running Burnp6 with an ambient temp of 20-25C.

Wink HSF

I am using a PEP66T@90 degrees and a thin Delta on one side. It works well. Connected to a baybus from PC Mods, I have full control of noise and cooling. Check it out at my website:

Click on any PIC that shows a hand to enlarge it!

667@920
39C full load
ambient temps 25C

Thanks for looking

Thumbs up FOP38. ya' its loud...

It is not bad if you have some way of storing the PC in anther room or something. Most don't have that option. I modified mine and put a 5000 RPM fan on it. The sound is easily bearable now. My idle and full power temp only went up by 2-3 C or so, not bad.

In my opinion there are 3 performance strengths of the FOP 38. One is the fan throughput, high RPM gives a good turbulent boundary layer over the fins that increases heat dissipation (if you can handle the noise). 2nd is the orientation of the heat sink blades. The CUSL2's fins are vertical. If the fan starts to fail, natural convection currents over the fins will start automatically due to hot air rising. Although this would most likely not be enough to maintain any kind of operational temp... Fins are always better vertical. In this case, when 1/2 of the flow goes out the bottom and 1/2 out the top, the green chipset cooler gets an extra rush of air over it. The air will not even be that hot since the amount of CPU heat dissipated is spread over so much air volume. My MB temp went down by 3 C after installing the FOP. Previously I had a horizontal finned cooler, cheap piece of crap... 3rd is the heat sink design. It is looks to be optimized way more than others I have seen. Also it is machined such that is should clear any nearby capacitors/surface mounted components. The 500 RPM fan I have came off my old cheap cooler. With the same fan on to different heat sinks there was very noticeable change. Rather that running consistently in the 40's, I am now usually running in the 30's.

On another note. I have heard the stock FOP-38 fan will overdrive the onboard fan header. The Speed is much lower and you may damage the board.

Later,
Kelly W

I have a FOP38 and yes, it is loud but you can get used to it...Temps are down 5-6C at full load compared to my other HSF, a GlobalWin FKP32. So, I'm very much satisfied with its performance....

There is always a trade-off if you really want top performance...In this case, it's the noise but we're not building freaking office computers here...We all want our systems to be at maximum efficiency (do we?)...I therefore just compare the FOP38 to like attaching a turbo or supercharger to a car....If you look at it in this perspective, then the noise won't matter much...

My FOP38 is pretty noisy, but the noise is drowned out by all my other case fans and CNN going in the background. :-)

As for functionality, I'm impressed! The FOP38 is about the best $20 I ever spent. Check out the improvement:

BIOS, 1 Ghz, 1.8 v (1.84v indicated)

-----------------------
Stock
-----------------------
Ambient 74F
System 82, +8
CPU 113, +39

-----------------------
FOP38, Artic Silver
-----------------------

Ambient 79F
System 86 +7
CPU 97 +18

------------------------
Windows ME
------------------------
Idle / Surfing

Ambient 79F
System 84, +15
CPU 82, +3

MBM5 Heat Up x10 min

Ambient 79F
System 86, +17
CPU 93, +14

I have one major complaint about the FOP38 and one minor one. The big one is the silly hinged clip. It fell off in my fingers several times when I tried to clip it on. I promptly exchanged it for a more robust and reliable clip I filched from a stock Intel HSF. Shame on GlobalWin for such a crummy clip!

The minor complaint is the heavy steel grill. The FOP38 heat sink and large fan is already a lot of weight hanging off the CPU. Add the heavy steel grill, and I don't feel comfortable with it. It is also restrictive, and I'm sure removing it aids airflow slightly. So I yanked it and put it up for possible use as a case fan guard, where it will do some good.

I still recommend the FOP38!
