HeatSink Compound, Which brand is BEST?

I am currently using "Z9 Type Silicone Heat Sink Compound" (white in color) by GC Electronics of Rockford, Illinois between my Alpha/Sunon Heatsink/Fan and my PIII-800 which I have overclocked to 1000mhz.

About 6 months later, the paste between the cpu and heatsink has virtually disappeared. I just basically discovered this as my PC used to be rock solid at 1ghz, but lately the temperatures started to rise from it's normal 35 Celsius to over 40 Celsius and I would start to get errors.

I just re-applied new paste, using the same one above.

Which is the BEST HEATSINK COMPOUND (preferrably available in Vancouver, BC, Canada or nearest mail-order) to use? I've heard posts about an "Arctic Silver" compound; is this the best?

Thanks in advance!

If the thermal paste has evaporized that`s not good!
I use no name compound as in my country Artic costs 15 times more!I could buy another HSF with that money!
But I don`t have any problems, and Artic would not give a big difference though.
Prefer that compound`s density is quite thin.
Many say Artic is the best,so it`s up to money.
Make sure that your HS is realy flat by lapping it-you gain a lot.

I don`t know the weather there but if it`s hotter then your cpu temp rise is normal. If ambient rise by 3C then you get about +5C in full load.

Silicone base heat compounds can be very effective but patentman is correct yours was not thick enough. If the viscosity of the compound is thin it will evaporate over time. I have torn apart a few old PC's and found the stuff was completely dried up!

Think of it just like you would for motor oil. Higher viscosity motor oil is used in hot running engines because the heat will burn up the normal stuff. Any silicone base thermal compound should appear thick as you apply it and it should cling to itself easily.

Artic Silver II is better but if you can't find it or don't want to pay that much. Radio Shack sells a decent silicone base compound that doesn't dry out quickly. (I bought a small tube for $3 once.)
