Question Install Athlon CPU Thermal Paste

Have a ASUS A7M266 motherboard with a Athlon 1.333 CPU.

I watched my local Tech replace my 40mm Antec HSF with the 60mm Antec HSF. He just squirted a *blob* of Artic Silver paste in the center of the Copper heatsink, (after cleaning the old goop off), the squished down the new 60mm HSF and latched it on to the Athlon 1.333 CPU.

I can't believe this is a correct or proper method.

Please comment on this installation method.

If you all feel I should correct this, please, explain how. I am 72 years old and a bit uneasy about messing with the CPU latch.

Many Thanks.

Jerking and Squirting

ROFL, U have a 1.33 Thunderbird and your thermal compound was squirted? Your dealer should of given you some free bacon and sausages with that purchase to go with your new AMD1.33 lean mean fat grilling machine.

Proper installation http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_s...structions.htm

Sheeesh! Just knew it.

Thanks for your reply.

Now what? Can you suggest a good way to *remove* all the extra Artic Silver from my cooling fins and so forth.

Also, when reinstalling properly applied Artic Silver I need a few clues as to how to and what to watch for.

ok.. guys.. its not a rocket science. squirt is still a vague meaning... the chance that he applied so much preassure that air bubbles formed in it are slim, and a blob dosnt hurt, its better to have to much thermal compound then to little. Also most cheap to average HSFs have enough pressure in there spring to double as shock absorbers for a small truck, enough of it will be squeezed off anyhow when the HSF is stuck on. how ever if he did get air bubbls in it.. thats bad.. as when the compound is smooshed, the bubbles will get trapped and air transfers heat much slower then the liquid compound.

barron.. you can try removing the hsf... how ever 2 things.. first dont ever press on the hsf directly.. you WILL smoosh compound off one side and then you really will be in trouble, as when you stop pushing on the hsf.. the hsf will pop up and now one side will not be incontact with the cpu or thermal compound, this will be very bad if you fail to remove the hsf and decide to leave it. Second.. if you are having trouble getting the spring latch off.. then dont bother.. like I said.. it probably has enough presure to smoosh off just enough compound.

lastly... and before you do any of this.. why dont you look at your temps? if there not high.. you going through alot of trouble for nothing.

Talking

The Old Man did it.

It seems pretty silly I suppose to those of you who do this kind of thing often.

I did make a little tool with a U shaped notch in the edge of the tool that presses on the latching device. And being an old electrician, covered the metal with electrical tape.

Okay, grin if you will , but the coast of another CPU is tough on the wallet with a limited monthly income.

Thanks all.
