New MB, RAM, CPU, PS, & case = dead PC

I purchased a new PS/case, MB, CPU, and RAM today, and assembled everything including the 2 hard drives from the machine I'm replacing. The machine ran for about an hour and without warning it shut down. Power and reset buttons have no effect--the CPU fan doesn't run, nor does any other piece of the system show any sign of life. Here's what I've done to troubleshoot:

Checked power coming from battery backup to PS. 120V ok.

Disconnected all internal connections from the MB except 24 pin power cable, ATX power cable, and power switch wire from front panel. Power switch still has no effect.

Took power switch from another case and connected to MB. Still nothing.

Removed memory & disconnected monitor and network cable. Nada.

By this time I have it narrowed down to PS or MB -- even if the CPU was toast, the fan should still run, right? Have I missed anything?

How would I go about testing the PS? I get voltage across the terminals of the ATX power cable -- is this sufficient to rule out the PS as the problem?

Thanks in advance for any input you might have.

Re: New MB, RAM, CPU, PS, & case = dead PC

You can buy relatively inexpensive PS testors that plug into the various power connectors (one at a time) to test both the cable and the PS for proper voltage. They run about $10.

One last step to eliminate the MB. Remove the MB from the chassis (case) and put the mb on a cardboard surface with the static envelope as a spacer and hook up the power supply an sw. See if it powers up or even if the fans now run.

The MB should not stop the PS fans from running they are connected internally. So my guess might be the you have bad PS.

Did you check the ATX voltages with this schematic?

My guess would be the power supply. Is there a green led light on the motherboard?
