Re: PSU Over rated or not??

Your system is similar in power consumption to mine (see profile). The most I've ever seen my PSU pull from the wall socket is 250 watts. If you take into consideration 80% efficiency, the entire system draws about 200 watts from the PSU.

Re: PSU Over rated or not??

If I guessed the correct unit, as you give no actual PN. It looks awfully weak on the 12v rails. Its only 28 amps combined. The 450 in my sig has 30 amps combined. Products - Power - HPU-4K530
You also say you are using 4 gigs of ram 4x 1 gig or 2x 2gig modules?
Not a big difference but 4 modules use more power than 2 do.

Now it looks like the supply you want costs $68.00.
Newegg.com - HIPER HPU-4M530-PS ATX12V 530W Power Supply 100 - 120V/ 195 - 240V CB, CE, FCC, TUV, cUL - Retail
Here is a quality supply that will blow the doors of the Hiper.
Its $85.00 after $15.00 rebate. Ten times the supply for $17.00 more.
Newegg.com - CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX ATX12V V2.2 550W Power Supply 90 - 264 V UL, CUL, CE, CB, FCC Class B, TUV, CCC, C-tick - Retail

The Hyper he is looking at should not even be called a 530. They do not state at what temp the output is rated at. Most cheap supplies are rated at 25C.
At 50C they put out half their rated output. At 50C 28/2 = 14 amps, not good. Good supplies are rated at 40 or 50C.

Here is a nice review on the Corsair supply.

Re: PSU Over rated or not??

wizkid, your system would be fine with any quality brand power supply. Your system draws about the same amount of power as my system (see profile). I'd recommend the 520HX if you haven't bought your PSU yet since you don't need anywhere near the level of power that the 620HX provides.
