psu problems

a friend of mine had to shut his system down fast, so he turned off the power strip it was plugged into. when he went to restart his machine, it would start to come on, and then stop. the fans would spin, but thats about it. he unplugged the psu from the strip, and noticed a blinking light on the psu. after taking the psu out, we opened it and saw scorch marks on the inside of the casing. we bought a new one, and still have no power. we looked for similiar posts/problems here, and followed a couple suggestions from other posts.we made sure it was plugged straight into an outlet to make sure it wasnt the power strip. we also tried to bridge the pins on the board to test the on/off switch and nothing happened. we are both confused and need some help. any ideas?

Re: psu problems

The first thing that comes to mind is to clear the cmos and install a new mobo battery.

Re: psu problems

I passed the info about the cmos and battery to my friend. one thing that occurred to me is that his machine is Gateway. After reading a couple more posts about proprietary mobos and psu, i wonder if that could be part of the issue.

Re: psu problems

Could be that:

1. The old PSU that blew took something else with it when it did so, or
2. As you say, the new PSU isn't compatible with the mobo. (proprietary pinout on the mobo)
