Random reboot without Reboot - could this be a PSU issue?

Around Christmas, I installed an amd x2 6400 (from a x2 4800) and a Corsair 620 psu, as well as some new ram. Everything was good for a few months, but then I started getting random reboots. I upped the voltage on the cpu and the crashes stopped, but now the problem has come back again.

The strange thing is, when it happens, the screen just goes black and the monitor turns off - all the fans stay on. If I push reset, the system is fine and reboots.

It could work for days without problem, or just a few minutes. Prime 95, memtest, orthos, all burn tests never crash with errors. They could run for days, or I could get a reboot in less than a 1/2 hour.

Unfortunately, I don't have the other parts laying around anymore. Where do you think I should start? Memory timings/speed have no effect whatsoever.

PSU? Corsair 620
CPU? x2 6400
Mobo? Asrock DualSATA2
Memory? Corsair XMS
Videocard? 8800GTS

I have seen similar problems and found them related to Nvidia cards and drivers. If you have the power button set to a 4 second delay in the bios the next time you have the problem press the power button in the same way you do to start your PC. If your PC shuts down normally you have a video problem. If you have a keyboard with a sleep button see if your PC will sleep, if so you will most likely find when you come out of sleep your monitor will be back on. Either of the above tests will point you in the right direction. I could be all wet but give it a shot.

Thanks wonderwench. I will pay attention to that.

I was also able to get my hands on another psu today. I installed that to start the troubleshooting process.

It looks like it was a power supply problem. I switched to a modstream520 (which should be an inferior psu in every way), and the crashing has stopped (for about 1 1/2 days). If it maintains stable, I will rma the corsair.

It was the power supply. Five days now and no crashing!

Sorry you had the issue. I did not get a PM notification for some reason and just now found this thread. If you need an RMA, start here:

Mike -- For the last several weeks some users, including me, have not been getting any automated notifications of PM's or of responses to subscribed threads. Many other users have been receiving them, strangely. I suggest that you indicate that you are having this problem, in the following thread. I think that the more users so indicate the more likely it is that action will be taken:

Home Page Mostly Missing; No Email Notifications

No problem. I will start a thread there later so I can get an RMA #.

It has been a couple of weeks now, and the system seems stable (except for one crash in Mass Effect - which I think was caused by beta geforce drivers).
