| Are there cabinets which can resist shock for travelling field computers Are there atx or server cabinets which are designed for pcs which have to travel on the field. I need to transport a PC to different locations and even in the car it tends to vibrate and im worried that sometime in the future a card or something will go lose and id be stranded. And no i cant use a laptop as it lacks the power and speed of a desktop pc as this involves capturing video in HD, controlling show automation etc at live events and such other tasks. Thanks |

| Re: Are there cabinets which can resist shock for travelling field computers I used to go to LAN parties a lot in high school, and I'd just put the case in the back seat with a seat belt on. Never had a problem... even with a water cooling kit! I don't think the vibration from a car will be a huge problem (unless ur off-roading, driving on busted roads, or going on a race track). What kind of distance are you driving? What kind of roads are you taking? What type of car do you drive? |

| Re: Are there cabinets which can resist shock for travelling field computers My car's a saloon. With the back seat and boot mostly free. The roads are BAD in my country. But i manage. Distances are mostly 20-30 kms one way. But when i have to go other states in my country for my work i cannot hand carry this inflight. Its already in a server cabinet. 2 times bigger than a normal cabinet. And about 30 kgs in weight. So in those situations it would have to come in the cargo van or equipment container truck. Ofcourse in a box or case of its own. But the vibration in those vehicles will be more than that of a car. Ive heard there are industrial computers and cabinets capable of hadling this kind of harsh treatment. Or as an alternate even a shock proof box or ABS case which can absorb vibrations will be a huge plus. For now the basic plan 'B' crude idea i made up was to have a nice polyurethane foam bock with good density (the kind thats in your sofa) as a cushion for the cabinet to sit on. This will cause the system to travel in a sorta floating condition and the shock has to travel through the foam to reach the system. And foam will disipate the vibration (hopefully) i think. Cause im sure something on your car's floor or dash board vibtrates more than whats on the seat. The cusion acts as a natural shock absorber right ? But the downside is that it would look ugly. Just wanted to see if there were any pro options out there. So keep your opinions coming guys. Thanks in advance. Last edited by plainman007; 06-24-2009 at 03:46 PM.. |

| Re: Are there cabinets which can resist shock for travelling field computers Here are lots of them, although they are designed for standard rack-mount equipment, not pc's. But maybe you can find something here that will be suitable: Pro Equipment Rack Cases | B&H Photo Video B&H, by the way, is THE place in the USA to go to for pro video and audio equipment and accessories. Obviously you won't generally want to order from them considering your location, but you may find their site useful looking for products and ideas. Regards, -- Al
