I like when stuff like this comes to light.

It is sort of like eating some food that used to be good for you, but it turns out to cause cancer or something.

Nice disclamer.

Personally, I would/will not stop using AS5 based on this. It's not as if the compound is corrosive or damaging. You just have to use caution when removing a heatsink and that's easily done. My guess is that enough people yanked their spreaders off that AMD felt compelled to issue their own disclamer.

I know that AS5 works better than chewing gum...

Just trust me on that one.

I remember that thread - pretty mind boggling

Oh, and I think this problem only exist for processors with a large surface area (like A64s, P4 & above). I've never had any problems with an Athlon cpu at all using various AS formulations over the years.

When my mobo died, I couldn't heat up the thermal pad, and had to remove it cold. Plus I had a stock Intel cooler that couldn't be twisted to loosen it, so the CPU came off with the HSF. Luckily no damage. They think AS5 sticks, how about those stock thermal pads?

After I yanked my CPU out of my P4PE I use a hairdryer to heat up the heatsink on a cold system.

any thermal grease compound will harden up once the system is powered down for a few hours...AS5 is the best thermal grease in my opinion and I've never had any issues with the CPU physically being removed from its socket when removing a heatsink...the key is to leave your system on for a few hours right before removing the heatsink, this will allow the grease to soften and in turn will make it easier to remove any heatsink

I also follow the instructions listed on the Arctic Silver site when applying the thermal grease and ignore the instructions listed with my CPU cooler...the Zalman CPU heatsink instructions state to apply a thin layer over the entire CPU...but the AS5 instructions state to just apply a drop in the center and wiggle the heatsink a little once it is put on...the center drop makes more sense as once you put the heatsink on it will automatically spread out over the face of the CPU...plus the center is where the main contact point is

Hmm, I guess since I am watercooled, my cpu does not get hot enough because I have shutdown and immediatly try and remove the waterblock, and still the cpu comes out with the waterblock.

Break out the hair dryer. Or, if you were "brave" you could turn your pump off for a few.

Well considering that the Iwaki MD-20 when I forget to unplug the pump only heats the water to a mere 30-32C before the radiator reaches a high enough differentail to keep the water constant. And with a hair dryer, I am afraid I will so somehting to the tubing

Ah, yeah...you definitely don't want to distort that tubing. Leaks are bad.

But, based on your posts and the fact that your sig does not change week to week, you don't seem like the kind of guy that is yanking his CPU out all the time.

Oh but I do. One week the cpu was mounted to the waterblock around 10 times, as I developed a leak that just would not go away
