| I am getting a checksum error for the past 10 days and I noticed that my computer is not keeping the correct time. I assume it is the battery. I have gone through my user manual for a P4T533-C and cannot find any information on where the battery is located on the motherboard and what type it is. Can someone give me an idea of where the battery would be on the motherboard and what type it is before I start to explore on my own. I have read posts that said one you remove the battery the motherboard resets to defaults. Then another post said leave the machine on and use plastic or wood to pop the battery out and you won't have that problem. Which way is best? I have not updated the bios since I bought the computer. I bought my computer in 2002 so I'm assuming my checksum error is due to failing battery. Thanks Rose |

| The battery is a CR2032. You can buy them just about anywhere (Radio Shack, drug store, Stop & Shop, etc.). You should be able to pick one up for about $2.

| Thanks for all your assistance. I squeezed the lever and the battery popped right out. I noticed the new battery I bought from Radio Shack was previously opened which I didn't see until I pulled it out of the plastic bag to put the battery into the tower. However, I installed it anyway and when I turned on the computer I got another check sum error. Now I don't know if the new battery is old or not. I'm going out again in another hour and I will exchange the battery for a new one. Rose |

| I'm suspecting that you'll get the checksum error the first time you boot with a new battery as well..

| When you remove the battery and add a new one you need to set your bios up to the right settings, it wont do it its self. |

| Yeah, good point! If ya don't know how, just set everything back to defaults in the bios.

| If you have a DVM you can check the battery. New batteries measure about 3.26 volts. They should work fine down to 3.00 volts (the nominal voltage of the battery). It's when they drop below 3.00 volts that they can cause issues, depending on the motherboard. There's one ASUS board, the P4T-E I believe, that won't even post if the battery voltage is below 3.00 volts.

| checksum fixed - bios? I think the checksum error is resolved. I thought I had posted another note but I don't see it so I will start again. I did get the checksum error again but I read your notes and went into the bios and said yes to the defaults. Where would I go to understand what I need to update the bios? I haven't played around with bios before and I'm somewhat familiar with dos commands but it has been quite a while since I have played with bios software. Here is the specs on my computer that I had built in 2001: Asus P4T533-C Motherboard Intel Pentium 4 2.26Ghz "Northwood" Processor, Retail w/Fan 1GB Samsung PC800 RAMBUS, 4 RIMMs Visiontek Geforce4 TI4400 128MB, Retail 1 Western Digital 120 Gig 1 x Seagate ATA IV 80 GB IDE Hard Drive Pioneer DVD-106S 16x/40x DVD Drive Plextor 40/12/40 CDRW Drive, Retail Kit Mitsumi 1.44MB Floppy Drive Soundblaster Audigy MP3+ Sound Card 3Com V.90 56K PCI Hardware Modem Antec PLUS1080 ATX Case w/430W Power Supply Microsoft Windows XP Home CD OEM The antec case is a server case 10 Drive Bays: - External: 4 x 5.25", 2x 3.5" - Internal: 4 x 3.5" Cooling capacity: up to 5 x 80mm fans - 2 rear (installed) - 1 front (optional) - 1 HDD (optional) - 1 side panel (installed) Fan Specs: - RPM 2000 - CFM 17.3 - dB(A) 25 Motherboards up to Standard ATX I have a external 200gig maxtor drive attached by USB 2.0 hub and will be shortly adding a Sony DVD recorder usb 2.0 to the hub too. I had additional connectors added as I thought I was going to set up a raid hard drive but changed my mind. I bought two new tricool antec fans 80mm - same size as the current fans installed in my case - today to install into my tower, as it runs kind of hot with summer weather and between the tower and 22 inch monitor I get a lot of warmth in my small pc room. I am having some problems getting the fans to work but I just printed the online instructions. I initially had one fan connected to a 3 pin on the motherboard and it didn't turn on. But now that I have printed the online instructions I see I had to remove the 4 pin adapter. I did connect both fans to open 4 pin power supply. However, when I tried to boot up the system it kept shutting down - as if the electrical power was being shut off. I didn't know if it was because I had initially started windows and shut down the power supply (I kept turning the power on and off as I tested the fans) and that is what caused it not too work. The fans did run in the 4 pin slots but with the tower going on and off I unhooked the two fans and then held in the start button until the computer booted up. I'm going to try again to connect the fans tomorrow, as the instructions state that I can connect the 4 pin to my power supply on any available connector and I don't have to disconnect the 3 pin. I also had the fan on medium mode which should of been okay but I will switch it to high mode and see what happens. The instructions states that I can plug another device into the other side of the adapter connector to power it, so that I don't loose a power plug. I will attach one of the fans to one of my current hard drive connectors and see what happens. Another question - I know my computer is lagging in the graphics area with the new pci express slots. I also noticed that the requirements for power supplies are high 500's and up in wattage. Will my antec case - Antec PLUS1080 ATX Case be able to install a 560 or 600 watt power supply or will I have to buy a another case? My thoughts where to keep my case and have everything replaced inside though having a cooling feature in the case would be nice with the hot summer months in florida. After about 3 hours the heat in the room causes the software to act funny and I have to shut down until it is cooled. I have a 22 inch viewsonic which gives off lots of heat and then the tower itself which gets hot. Thanks for your help. Rose |

| Your case should be fine for a 500-600 watt power supply. If it was me I'd start anew, with everything. Newer cases are better made, bigger fans 120mm, and quieter, with more air flow.
