Question which cpu upgrade?

Ok I'm looking to upgrade my current AMD 3200+ to something else and I'm considering the AMD 4400 X2..... the 4600 is $100 more and has only 2x512kb L2 cache where as the 4400 has 2x1mb L2 cache.... the only difference is that you pay $100 more for less cache and 200mhz more processor power..... I'm kind of set on the 4400 x2 but if there's any other opinions about what I should get just let me know.... price range is probably around the price of the 4400 x2 which is $458 right now...

I would get the 4400+X2, as the 4400+X2 is great plenty for gaming. I have a 4200+X2 in my AMD machine and it's just fine for gaming.

if you wanna save even more money then go for the X2 3800+...the 3800+ ain't no slouch in the performance department either ...it also runs cooler...although it does not come with the extra cache...but I doubt the extra cache makes a huge difference in performance anyhow

Another choice is the 4200+ X2, which is the same cpu that I have.

well I'm selling my old cpu (amd 64 3200+) and my old a8v deluxe motherboard for $200 and so that would make it only $260 for me to get the 4400 so I'll probably get that one...

Opterons are better value than X2, all have 1mb cache (x2) and overclock better on average. I recommend Opti 170.

In that case get the 4400+ X2. I personally see no need to get anything faster than a 4200+ X2 or a 4400+ X2 cpu.

Very true. And if you don't "need" dual core you could get a single core Opteron also.

Why not just wait until the new AM2 socket comes out?

well i'm not going to be doing this untill the first of june so maybe something will drop in price before then but yeah the x2 4400 is still at the top of my list because of the dual core.... i always do more than 4 or 5 things at once since i have two samsung 970p monitors..... makes me want to use the space lol.... well in reguards to the opti ..... what's the advantages? i see that NCIX has the Opti 170 dual core for $469 ... that's a little cheaper but it's only 2gh as opposed to the x2 4400 that's 2.2ghz

By reputation and many posted results, the Opterons will OC way farther than the X2 CPUs. My 165 is a 1.8 stock and will do 2.7+ on water, a 50% OC at stock Vcore. If you don't intend to OC, you could go either way. IMO, most of this you'll have to use a benchmark utility to see the difference anyways. So, you could shop based on price.

Mike.
