Fresh installation guide needed

Hi all,

I have a AMD 4400+.

Want to install win XP fresh, but there is a installation guide from mr steveo, but its for intel sytems, is there one for my system? I know, i can follow that guide, but what about installing the 4400+? Do i need special drivers for that cpu?
My install is XP SP2...

What about that dual core hotfix etc? What special stuff must i install for my system?

Greetings!

you can still use that guide as a basic reference but you need to substitute certain parts with the AMD equivalent...for example instead of the Intel chipset software you need to use the nForce drivers...and yes you do need to install the AMD driver first followed by the Microsoft dual core hotfix + registry edits (if you have a dual core processor)

In what order, first the AMD driver, then the hotfix, then chipset drivers, then windows updates?

That hotfix is it really needed, and that AMD driver?

Service Pack
AMD Driver
nForce drivers
MS Hotfix + registry edits
Windows Update
video card drivers, and all other drivers

that's the order I do it...read a few guides online that stated to go in that order and it works fine for me so I'm sticking with that

*also SATA drivers need to be loaded first if you do not have a Windows CD that comes pre-loaded with Service Pack 2

**in order to do it in the order I gave, you must first burn a copy of the AMD driver and nForce drivers to a CD/DVD beforehand because you will not have internet access until AFTER you install the nForce drivers

So does the XP software with SP/2 Pack included have the SATA drivers ready to go ? Up until recently I've been using the older XP Pro disk with SP/1 and had to make a RAID floppy to get my SATA drivers running using the F6 steps at the Windows loadup. Always thought that was a pain when just needing the SATA and not the RAID.

I'm using an SP2 disk and I still needed to F6 with my DFI mobo, I also needed to F6 to build a raid0 on my intel D875PBZ rig using a disk with SP2 slipstreamed.

SP2 does come with the SATA drivers...I recently did a reformat and tried it out as a test...it worked fine...you only need to do the F6 method for RAID configurations...

not sure about the slipstream method but if you have a version of XP that comes bundled with SP2 then you are good to go

to check if you have the AMD driver installed go into Device Manager and under "Processor" click on the Properties button...if under "Driver" & "Driver Provider" it says AMD then you have it installed...if it says "Microsoft" then you do not have it installed...

to check if you have the MS dual core hotfix installed look under Add/Remove Programs, and see if you have Windows Update #KB896256 installed

here are instructions on how to install the AMD driver + dual core hotfix...

Hmm... I don't have that hotfix installed either. Any idea if it would improve folding performance? I have both cores working at 100% all the time so I wouldn't think it would ever try to throttle back my cpu.

Hi:

I recently installed 2 systems.
One was XP Pro SP2.
The other was MCE2005.

Both were installed to systems with:
Motherboard: Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe nForce4 SLI X16
CPU: Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Dual Core S939 Toledo
RAM: 2GB (Corsair XMS-3500LL PRO 2GB kit) PC3500 CL2/1T
2 x 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 SATA 3Gb/s 7200RPM 16MB
etc

Neither install required the F6/floppy load.
I didn't install any AMD drivers.
The MS hotfix was likely done when I installed all
from the Windows Update site.
I did not install the Asus Cool and Quiet or similar.
I installed the nVidia motherboard software from the Asus disc.
I then installed the latest v6.85 motherboard software from nVidia's site.
I did not install nNVidia's IDE drivers but kept what XP installed.
I did not install nVidia's Firewall/networking stuff.

Both cores appear to be working normallyaccording to
Task Manager >Performance.

Happy trailz,

Some sites are mirroring the hot fix. I've downloaded it but didn't install yet.
