Gaming CPU 64 X2 3800+ Or 64 4000+

Im looking to build a new gaming rig and was jst wondering what would be a good buy. Id like to spend max $350 on a cpu. and 150 on a mobo.

What would be the way to go dual core or single core.

thanks

X2 3800+ is a good investment, not only does it play all games nicely, but in the future, it will increase performance on multi-threaded games and apps.

Agree

I agree with Sammy------that 3800+ X2 is a whole lot of bang for the buck.....

Incredible chip for about $320----less on ebay...

I have built two 3800+ X2 rigs and they both are wonderful.....

I have had TWO instances of prime 95 running----the task manager----Microsoft Word----Microsoft Outlook and a temp monitoring program "Smart Guardian"

ALL running at the same time-----AND surf the net

With NO slowdown!!!

They are incredible multitaskers----just try doing all of that with ANY multithreaded Intel----or even an Intel dual core. Will bring those machines to their knees....

And when games and other apps are better written to support dual core....Oh Baby!!

Just remember to do two things:
1. Load the special AMD X2 drivers
2. Do the Microsoft Windows XP Hotfix for X2 Dual Cores

Good luck!

John

John
do you have any links for these two items?..thanks

I found this on AMD's website...is this the X2 driver you are referring to?

AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (exe) 1.2.2.2 -

Allows the system to automatically adjust the CPU speed, voltage and power combination that match the instantaneous user performance need. Download this Setup Installation program (EXE) to automatically update all the files necessary for installation. This package is recommended for users whom desire a graphical user interface for installation. This .EXE driver is a user friendly localized software installation of the driver designed for end-users. This driver supports AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core processors on Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2003 SP1.

Driver here:----the one you quote is correct "AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (exe) 1.2.2.2 -"

http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/..._13118,00.html

Hotfix Here:

http://www.amdzone.com/files/WinXPdualcorehotfix.exe

Hotfix Explanation Here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=896256

I also installed the registry hack that is described in the hotfix although it seems to indicate that this is a way to turn the hotfix off.....

Several people on several forums claim the registry hack is necessary to ensure the hotfix is actually turned on-----just make sure 1 is set in the Value data box to enable the new performance state policy behavior.

Also don't download the Cool 'n Quiet driver and ensure Cool "n Quiet is disabled in Bios.

Get 81.95 or above Nvidia Drivers and 5.12 Catalyst----both are written to better support Dual core.

One thing to add is good cooling is a must when overclocking these beasts. Especially if going above 1.5v to the cpu.

Absolutely-----I found my temps starting to jump dramatically above 1.475 vcore

1.55 - 1.6 was my sweet spot for Vdcore...

And I had to have an EXCELLENT air cooler

Joe----I removed the IHS

Temps never went higher than 46C

With the IHS on----and that cooler-----62 sounds about right

I also put a tad more powerful 120 fan on it----still quiet, but the RPM is more like 1900-2000

a 120 x 38 Slow speed Panaflo would be, IMHO, a superb fan for that cooler

I also lapped it REALLY good.....

The lapp on that cooler is horrible!
