A8V Deluxe second Sata drive install question

Going to install a second Sata HD as a means of back up and I was wondering if I have to install drivers for it by way of floppy like I did on my first Sata install?

Also, do you think it is a good idea to install my OS on the second HD as well? I was thinking of the possibility of a multiple boot and keeping one of the HD less cluttered with junk for games etc

Many thanks!

Nope, you should be good to go on the second drive.... If you do go with multiple installs of the same OS don't forget to manualy edit your startup choices so you don't go getting them mixed up....

Hey thx 3 of 7

When you say manualy edit my start up choice, I presume that I will have this option open to me when I boot PC, just select which OS/HD to boot first right?

cheers

You have that option when you run a dual boot with 2 different operating systems, I'm not sure exactly how things are going to work when running 2 installs of the same one (I'm presuming XP correct?)
In XP take a look at control panel/system/advanced/startup and recovery.... You can edit your boot messages there...

I was just thinking about what your proposing here and though I'm not a lawyer, but I believe that 2 running instances of the same windows on the same computer may be a contravention of the EULA.. It states you can only install one copy of the software on a single computer..

You can read it by going to start/run winver

Oops, ok I understand and thanks for pointing it out to me. I will just keep the one XP install on my primary Sata drive and use the second as backup.
I tried installing the second Sata drive yesterday but all I got was an error message telling me that there was no OS drive installed...I opened up setup screen to see if I could find it there and all that was showing was the floppy and DVD drives. As soon as I unplugged the new drive all returned to normal (Widows booted as before, no error messages etc).
I cannot figure out why this is happening, maybe I have to set the boot priority to my working Sata drive first and then install the second one after that so as not to confuse it?

I'm not sure on your board which one is the first port, but I'd try swapping the existing drive to the other sata port on the Mobo.

Tried swapping them around and still no joy
All I get is the same "no hard disk drive dected! , press "G" to continue" followed by "Reboot and sellect proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"...

I have also made sure that the Promise raid controller is disabled and I have both drives plugged into the VIA 8237 VT one...

My primary Drive is an older 250 gig Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 Sata and the new one that I am trying to install is a Maxtor SataII (Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 NCQ 250GB 6V250F0 SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM ); could this be an issue?
Or perhaps my VIA controller drivers need updating?
BTW, I am running the latest BIOS for this mobo.

Found this bit of info regarding SATA II drives not being compatible with this mobo:
http://support.asus.com/faq/faq.aspx...l=A8V%20Deluxe
The solution seems to be to lock the drive at 150 MB/s data transfer rate by HDD jumper setting. Only problem is that it does not show where the jumpers should be set on a Maxtor HD SATAII ...

Time to take the drive out and have look-see...

Cracked it!

It turned out to be a transfer rate conflict.... I found the user manual online with a nice clear pic of the jumper settings, then I switched it from it's default 3Gbps to the recommended 1.5 Gbps, jumped into setup to tell the BIOS what my 1st HD should be (for some reason it picked the new HD as the 1st), then a partition, format etc of the new drive and it seems to be running fine so far.

Just waiting for the last bit of formatting to finish and then off to backup all my important files.

Shame about the loss of transfer speeds but beggars can’t be choosers (upgrade to PCI-e board and GPU a long way off yet).…

Cheers!
