Got home early, bolted down the solid pot & thought I'd use up what was left of LN2.
I tried the x15 multi...it seemed to work "a little" better than last night, but I'm not sure how much better exactly. The tube temp got away from me @ -93C and locked everything up. Best results came with better temp control = better LN2 control, probably half my problem.
I'll give it another go next weekend I guess. Gonna take lots of time & lots more LN2 to bring this chip up to it's capacity.

New Bios.....the same

I finally had some time to play with my trusty NF4 Ulra rig......

Flashed to the very latest bios and saw no change in overclock or performance

One thing----the new Bios let's you set a temp offset on the CPU temp reading....

In other words------if you aren't happy with reported temps on your CPU...

Why just set the -10 setting and VIOLA! You CPU is now running 10 degrees cooler!!!!

NOT!

Wonder who dreamed that one up......

Thank goodness for CMOS reloaded though-----setup back to my best BIOS settings was a breeze-----a superb overclocking feature!

NTune 5.0-----the latest Beta people are talking about still only does about 1/4 of the settings on this DFI board.

The rig seems very solid with these 406 Bios------but there was no change in performance-----from what I can tell.

4 Gigs RAM

Before I move on to AM2 or Conroe-----

I want to squeeze the last little bit out of my trusty NF4.

Thinking about adding a couple more gigs of RAM for games and video editing.

I have lying around 2 sticks of 1 gig PQI sticks that would do FSB of 230 at CAS 2.5, 1T

My plan is to add them to my Ballistix for 4 gigs overall...

Ballistix in the Orange----PQI in the Yellow slots

Drop the CAS to 2.5 overall

Drop the FSB to 230 or so

Raise the multi to 12

and realize that I'd only get a Command Rate of 2T

Sound feasible???

Downsides???

Both sets of RAM need a shade over 2.8 VDIMM to do their best so I'm thinking I won't have a problem there....

DDR2 is on the way-----might as well use the DDR RAM

John

Might work, does the ballistix do cas 2.5 @ 230? Prob best bet is to try 200mhz with 4 sticks and work your way up.

When I played with the Ballistix-----it would do a 2.5 CAS-----but at a lower FSB

If I remember right-----it was around 230 and below.

200 then work my way up is what I'll do

Should be interesting......

Sierra always claimed the 4 1 gig sticks was a BIG strain on the memory controller....

If I get it to work----at all-----I wonder if the loss of overclock and Command Rate will be offset at all by the gain in "real world performance" with the additional RAM.

Should be interesting....

But in the long run-----lately anyway-----I'm finding that with all the video work I've been doing, I need a LOT more storage space vice a faster machine.

500 Gigs when you are capturing .avi for later editing is NOTHING!!!

Get's eaten up VERY quickly!!

John

BIOS question. I'm trying 704-2BTA on my Ultra-D and the choices I get for DRAM Drive Strength are: normal 1-4 and weak-1-4. What is a good choice for the more common RAM types. I used to use Level 7 for that setting before.

What settings did you choose for DRAM Drive Strength and DRAM Data Drive Strength? Did you use DFI 406 BIOS or Modded 406?

Every RAM uses a diff dr str, however I dont know what those ones correspond with in the bios you are using...

Heh, I just mean I am not sure what normal 1-4 and weak-1-4 correspond to in the older BIOS so I cant really tell you what to use until I know. I am using 0510 Hellfire from a year ago for my Ultra, havent tried that new one.

Ah. I saw DFI LP UT NF4 Ultra-D (0704-2BTA) in your sig. So I assumed you were using it.
