I hope this in the right place to get help.....

As my sig shows......

Asus A8N-SLI Mobo Socket 939
AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+ CPU
2X 1GB PC3200 DDR Ram
Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit

Now, The problem. No Sound!!

Windows knows it's a Realtek chip but has no drivers. Download vista drivers from realtek and they don't work. Windows then says a solution is found and that windows update will have an update that will fix it. NOT, Windows updates says no updates are available. Stupid OS! So I google, And I Google, And I google again. Nothing that works. My oldest daughter comes by to visit with me and her sisters. I go to put on a movie for all 3 girls to watch together and realize I have yet to fix this damn sound. Spend another hour trying with no success. (No, I don't own a TV set top DVD player or even a newer model TV that one can connect to)

Finally gave up and apologized to the girls. Went back to napping. Now, For the last hour I sit here fighting this same losing battle with no sound. I want to use the HD on-board sound and not an add in. My system runs way too hot as it is due to malfunction A/C in our home and it's 92F in here everyday! Another thing we can't afford to fix and to add another card in the PC will just add to the heat.

So now, I sit here with a computer that would be plenty powerful enough for my needs with a decent amount of RAM and storage space but almost worthless for me to try and earn anything with with no sound.

Anybody have any ideas on how to fix what I have with little to no cash outlay and without replacing the MoBo which would mean CPU and RAM would have to be new as well. To top it all off, My video card is almost an antique but it is still clodding along. Please help.

Keri

Thanks! Got it, Installed it......No Sound!

Windows says:
Download and install the driver for Realtek AC'97 Audio/nForce4 for AMD

This problem was caused by Realtek AC'97 Audio/nForce4 for AMD. Realtek AC'97 Audio/nForce4 for AMD was created by NVIDIA Corporation.

A solution is available that will solve this problem.

Solution

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To use this device, visit Windows Update to install the latest drivers.

How do I install drivers and other optional updates on Windows Vista?

To install optional updates, you need to review and then select them from the list of updates that Windows finds for your computer.

Note: If you have turned on automatic updating, you might not see the driver for Realtek AC'97 Audio/nForce4 for AMD listed in optional updates. If this is the case, the driver has already been downloaded to your computer and you can ignore this problem report.

Open Windows Update.
In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.
If any updates are found, click View available updates.
Select the optional updates that you want, and then click Install. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Windows update finds nothing!

Again I say, "Stupid Windows"!

I have tried everything. I am at wits end which does not take much since my head injury. I get to the point of beating it to pieces quickly.

So far, Nothing works. Thanks for trying though.

Keri, have you tried going into the device manager in control panel/system and uninstall the sound card...
Then reboot and when Vista finds new hardware let it search for a new driver from the windows update site.

I know you said you didn't want a 3rd party sound card, but you can pick one up for cheap like this one

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829270002

or probably even cheaper on ebay. Just something to consider if you aren't able to fix the onboard.
So this happened immediately after migrating to Vista from XP? Have you tried browsing for the downloaded install file when the New Hardware Wizard detects it on boot? I have had downloaded driver exe's fail by just running them, but then got the device to work by manually steering windows to the drivers.

It's not a matter of "wanting" an add-in card. It's a matter of heat! Even a slight bit more heat in the case with the other conditions I have can be deadly to the entire system. It's on the fence happily now and I am not going to push on it.

Not much of a Migration, Fresh, Clean Install on a New HDD. I have indeed tried manual, Auto, Prayer and even cussing. None worked yet.

Also, Read the reviews on the card at the link you posted! Even if I did go with an add-in I am sure not interested in one with MORE problems.

"Cons: This sound card does not agree with Vista"

I didn't see that part sorry You could probably get a used Creative off ebay that is Vista supported. They reversed on supporting a lot of the older cards where they weren't going to at first. I never thought of my sound card as adding much heat to the case. Of course I keep mine open and have a 9500 Zalman. I'm rocking out right now and the HS on the audio processor is barely warm to the touch (X-fi extreme music)

Since you seemed to have tried everything I only see a few options.
1. wait and pray that they come out with some drivers that work.(doubtful since they think they already have)
2. go back to XP since I am guessing it worked then. If not then I would strongly suspect hardware.
3. call Asus support and hope they speak english after being on hold for a week and then tell you to do all the things you already tried. (might be worth a shot)
4. get a third party sound card (that agrees with Vista)

Could you elaborate more on the MOBO than just P5B. The P5B doesn't use a realteck onboard chip. I went to the asus Tw site for the plain P5B and it doesn't use a realtek chip. Just curious, I am assuming it's another variation of the P5B.
