USB 2 poblems

hi all, hope you all had a geat xmas!

I've got myself a silly problem that i've had for ages but never really cared much about until it came to backing up stuff to an external usb2 hard drive. Ive also had this problem with 2 previous systems (each with different motherboards)

Whenever i plug a USB 2 device into my USB 2 port XP always gives me the message that th device can perform faster. That's great but how? It's running at USB 1 speed even though USB 2 drivers are meant to be installed with the XP service packs. Ive tried finding USB 2 drivers but im not sure what im looking for to be honest. If anyone can help itd be great, backing up 25GB of music with usb1 speed is NOT fun.

Thanks all, system is as follows:

AMD Skt AM2 64bit X2 5200 (clocked to 2.8ghz)
Asus M2R32 MVP Crossfire motherboard
2GB DDR2 800mhz Geil RAM
ATI X1900XTX 512mb
250GB SATA Seagate
Windows XP Pro (service packs 1 and 2 installed)

Talking RyuuKi . . .a-bit-O-help=maybe. . . .

.......just from the same kind of experience/problem i've just had on this a week ago; this from repairing my son's XP home_w/SP2 OS setup........ i too had this error/problem notice come up; what i basically did was re-installed the USB driver's by letting it go & find them on the SP2 CD for which i specified XP to go to the drive and find.........after it did just that and found the driver's & all ( this i noticed by seeing in Device Manager under the Universal Serial BUS controllers, it now show's the "Standard ENHANCED PCI to USB Host Controller ")....this is to show that it DOES NOW, have the USB2 controller's at hand..... .....hope this "sort-of-fix" will help you out as it did for me......

mr. Charles

If the problem exists with both systems, I would suspect that the backup device has lost USB 2 capabilities, also check the cable.

Have you any USB 1/1.1 devices plugged in too?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that plugging in a USB 1/1.1 device into a hub will drag down all devices on the same hub to that speed.

Monkey is on point. Sometimes the USB 2 devices operating at USB 1 speed can simply be due to the fact of how the tiers follow to the end point. Think of the enhanced controller as a big layer. From it it has a few point to points which is to the root hub(s). What can get confusing is that the hubs can actually be single, couple, or a few in amount. If it is higher than one port and a USB 2 and 1 occupy the hub, it will only transfer at USB 1 speed. This is why, now, you beginning to see multiple enhanced layers in the core logics-to split the hubs into better partitions. So, in other words all USB 2 capable devices MUST be segregated from USB 1.

The question is, if it is the only device in the root hub does it transfer at negotiated USB 2? If not then your issue can be due to your installation or something else. As long as you see the enhanced controller the USB 2 ability is “installed.” It should be there, since you have a modern motherboard, unless there is an option you have disabled in the BIOS for USB 2. There can be such, but should be enabled by default.

If you look at the properties of the root hub you will see the devices connected to it, and therefore be able to discern which USB 1 device is occupying the partition. At least try to segregate the USB 2 into its own root hub and see if you does operate at full speed.

@ leejr
The device is perfectly fine as it transfers at correct rate on my laptop and 3 other PCs in the house. It also does the same with my MP3 player (creative Zen).

I shall try what Mr Charles sugested as it makes most sense. All devices plugged in are of USB2 or at least my keyboard, mouse and Wacom tablet advertised themslves being USB2 but obviously I cant measure transfer speed with these devices :P so cant tell if theyre running usb2 or not. USB2 is enabled in BIOS as well.

It tells me the drivers arent installed (god knows why) so i'll try them off the SP2 CD as i never thought about using the CD before. Ill try it out tomorrow as im at my girlfriends on my laptop right now.

Thanks for the help, ill post back with results
Cheers and happy new year!

Aaaah, the Misleading Labels of Descriptions. A cursed magic item that is rarely rolled by the DM. Many manufactures will note that it is “USB 2 something” when it itself is only capable of USB “1” transfers. This is due to the many disconcerting issues that ignorant consumers may come to when looking for a product to purchase and could cause a preventative purchase decision for that particular product which does not seem to be USB 2 capable/compatible.

Which you really need to go by is the description of the speed. There are 3 which will note the ability of the product-low-speed, full-speed, and hi-speed. Unfortunately, some will only note the interface (as in 1 or 2) and this can still cause issues, because they mean compatibility not the ability. To note most printers, mice, keyboards, and Wacom tablets are USB “1” low-speed to full-speed. The only time it really means USB 2 if it is to say Hi-Speed (480 Mbit/s). For example, the Logitech G5 notes Full-Speed USB (12Mbit/s). Which before USB 2 came along was USB "1". But mice during this time operating at low-speed.

All devices run at USB2 speed, my memory stick which is perfectly capabale of full speed usb2 transfer still turns up as "can perform faster" on my PC yet it runs at full speed on ALL computers and laptops in the house....which is why i believe it is a driver issue. It isn't a hardware issue as I have also had this problem with 3 other motherboards each of a different brand. So that is why i think it is a driver issue.

But more to the point, problem is now fixed i believe. I used Mr Charles' solution, working good now. Thanks a lot to everyone

Haave a kick *** new years
