I like to live dangerously. No Anti-Spyware or Anti-Virus on my computer. Just everyone else's, because they're the ones that don't know how to get rid of it. I think it's too annoying to have to turn off Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware programs when I want to game. Constant reformatting for ultimate performance. ;-)

I've been keeping track of, and downloading, all updates since SP2 and integrate them to make a new installer CD every month nowadays. Works really good if you don't get carried away with all it's features. Even so, I tend to keep whichever PC I'm installing on completely off the network until I have all my security related software installed.

Your stategy appears sound. Took a look at nLite site and it looks promising. Maybe this weekend I can try it out. I am overdue for a new slipstream. Thanks for linky

We all have different approaches. My backup workstation/email computer, a 3.2C D865 iteration, is running W2000pro. Don't want to keep all my eggs in one basket. Had an instance where an update killed a specific functionality on both our main rigs. Of course this wasn't discovered when it could be addressed without stress. Having the box on 2000 allowed it to provide the functionality needed.

Cheers,

Zeppelin

As many of you might guess, I have not had any infection or malware successfully penetrate my systems in years. I have many layers of protection, both at the gateway to my LAN as well as on each system attached to the LAN. I have had occasional email virii attempting to get in, and dozens of zombie port scanners a day, but none ever have, nor have I ever lost any system to malware.

Some may think my campaign to get everyone here with the best possible layered protections they can afford suffers from excessive missionary zeal, but I beg to differ on that. There is no such thing as too much protection, there are always potential areas of exposure that will pop-up. All one can reasonably do is to make things as hard as possible. My feeling is that if members here are willing to pay $1k+ for dual SLI vidcards to play a $40 game a few FPS faster, they should be willing to pay a couple of hundred dollars make sure they protect that investment.

Spybot S&D - $0
CA Etrust AV - $0 (for one year from MS link)
Kerio FW - $0 (for now, may change soon)

Intrusions, infections etc - 0 (so 0+0+0 = 0 as one would expect)

Plus FW on my router.

That's my computer, my wife's computer - a few scary moments...

I'm exactly the same, but have only done reinstalling of the OS to resize the system partition, install Linux etc. Never had to reinstall due to spyware, viruses. I do have a friend however who feels it necessary to send me virus-laden files every now and then.

I don't reinstall because of Viruses or Spyware, but I constantly do restores because anytime I feel like the computer is not running as fast as it used to, I just generally re-install windows...I did a virus scan/spyware scan before posting here and it was completely clean (fresh install about 29 days ago) and I haven't put any anti-virus or anti-spyware on the computer...

I have become dangerous of not reinstalling windows. I think I am two years between formats. I do visit many risky sites, but my layered protection saves me.

I scan my hard drive daily for Spyware and Viruses. Nothing is even found. I am proud of that. I had a friend that always had many problems keeping his computer clean. I showed him the securing XP link here, and told him to follow it he wouldn't have many problems.

He still thanks me for enlighten him, his computer runs as fast it always has. A testament that security layers works.

Not to get off topic, but I'm wondering if you start from scratch every time or use the install files created with nlite and intergrate the latest updates to them.

From scratch into a slipstreamed SP2 disc. I also implement a few drivers as well, mostly RAID related ones.

I voted "I think one sneaked past me." because yesterday i found out that the WinXP Firewall service refused to start.

Did a virus and ad/spyware check, but found nothing.

Service didn´t start because the path to the file was somewhat messed up. Had to change to value in the registry manually so now everything is back to normal.

Don´t know what caused this firewall/service failure (maybe when i was messing with the registry to be able to install the BF2 update (changed standard program path to drive with more than 3 GB of free spave) or when i played around with Port settings (there are some ports i need for one or the other reason).

Except this one "incident" yesterday, my system seems to be safe.

Greetings

Dru
