I'll probably be going with Kaspersky once my two Mcafee subscriptions dies out. (I got a second copy for free after signing up to opt out of their class action suit. I wonder if another class action suit will be started against not honouring rebates?).

If Mcafee hadn't screwed me out of my $50 rebate I probably would have considered updating to version 9 which is out now for $20 after rebate ($50 - $30 rebate).

There's more to an anti-virus program than protection. I find that Panda works a lot like NAV - it's really hard to make system changes once it's embedded into your HD. I stay as far away from NAV as humanly possible. I don't like problems like what looks like 'corrupted registries', not being able to read data from a semi-crashed disk, not being able to image a drive, etc.

my dad has nav and avg.
wen he installed avg it found a lot more virussen on his comp wile nav didn`t show any.

There is not a scanner who will be best, it's a weel that's constants change an brings others tho the top.

Today maybe nav but tomorrow it will be another one, it's just a game who is first in discovering new virus and who is first in healing them.

I disagree. The same products always end up in the top tier in detection rates every year (on average, not in one test or for one virus). AVG isn't one of them. Neither are those other free AV products.

On what basis do you make these claims?

http://www.av-comparatives.org/seite..._2004_02zz.php

http://www.av-comparatives.org/index...paratives.html

http://www.av-comparatives.org/index...paratives.html

What if you bought the PRO versions of the free versions? Is it a matter of automatic updates? Do you think it would be better to have no protection (there are people who do not believe in anti-virus programs. And if you say that the free versions are no good, are they likely to surmise that they are all no good?)

What do you think of Bit-Defender free-edition? If anyone can make a good AV it would be Bit-Defender.

http://www.bitdefender.com/bd/site/products.php would tend to support your claim if your claim was made with on-demand internet & email scanning. But it wasn't so long ago that McAfee didn't have worm and trojan scanning.

You're quoting one source. I linked quite a few (incl. this one) in another thread regarding NOD32. Compare results for the last 3 years in mags and in online reviews and you will see that my "claims" are pretty accurate. You get what you pay for...and I say this as a long time Avast user.

I didn't consider BitDefender free in my statement (I named the 3 free AV products already), since it's on demand only. It makes an excellent backup scanner though...

I've been a Mcafee user since version 3. But I keep hearing of how bad it is. And I am adamant againt NAV's use on anyone's computer, with Panda bringup a close second.

So it isn't just a matter of what you pay for but also any inconviences you paid for but didn't want. To wit, after installing Mcafee it decided to change its interface; so I ended up with about 30 different entries in my firewall. Everything it updates its GUI I have to delete the old 'holes' and enable the new ones in Kerio.

Now that MS has bought out RAV perhaps MS will offer it free to its users. Who knows?

I know it isn't. I too avoid Norton and any other buggy bloatware like the plague. It's a personal decision to balance your needs. I compared a few products in the NOD32 vs NAV thread:

NAV vs. NOD32

I'm going to have to drop that program and go to AntiVir.

If you hit the 'result history' next to any program you'll see the actual results of their tests. mcafee got 16 passes 17 fails. hmmm. NAV got 26/6. But I still wouldn't install NAV.

I spent a day trying to get rid of one afew months ago.

Finally I ran adware and removed a bunch of files, then ran AVG and was able to remove it.
