Avg antivirus

Hi all. My Nortons just ran out so I uninstalled it and tried avg. So far I really like it. The only question I have is do you have to have the controll center running in order for it to work or is that just for updates ??

No, you do not have to have the control center running for it to work. But without it you may not know if something isn't working properly.
More FAQ's here.

Also, set the updates to 2 days and retry every 2 days.

I also just finally ditched Norton and started using AVG, its amazing.

It feels great to have an unobtrusive antivirus and not something that just overwhelms you and your resources!

FYI: AVG 6.0 Support ending

According to Grisoft, they will be ending support for AVG 6.0 at the end of the year. No product or definition updates. They're notifying registered subscribers to upgrade to AVG 7.0. Not sure about ones using the free edition. I know there's a new free edition based on v7.0 in beta right now.

The people currently using AVG Free Edition v6 will be sent email notification when the new free version is final and they will be sent a link to upgrade to it.

You tested detection rates of popular AV products and found the "opposite"? Please share your results...

i am just going by normal usage i havent downloaded viruses on purpose, and i stay away from most sites where you could pick them up; porn, warez, etc.

But in email, AVG has caught a few more bad messages than NAV ever did.

No AV can offer 100% protection. False positives are another issue. However, AVG scores, on average, are considerably lower than those of NAV or any other top tier product. Actually, AVG usually falls behind other free products i.e. Avast and AntiVir.

Now, if AVG is good enough for you, that's a whole other issue. Please note that no free product has ever matched any top tier product on average in various tests...

BTW, I don't like NAV; still, their AV labs are quite well rated in the industry. Saying that AVG is better, in this regard, is just not true.
