"I don't need anti virus software", says user.

This person I know ...who shall remain unknown...stated that he had no use for anti virus because he never had any trouble before.

actually it's not that foolish...I know a few people who don't use any antivirus...as long as you stay away from websites that are virus havens (porn, warez, peer to peer) and you are vigilant about hyperlinks and e-mail attachments then the chances of getting a virus are greatly reduced...Viruses usually do not spring up like magic and are mostly the result of user action of some kind so theoretically you can get away without using an antivirus..

I personally would not recommend that and consider Antivirus software a must have on all of my systems but I can somewhat understand the rationale behind not using it

Question

Hi All,

I think Viruse infections should be considered on the same level has Hard drive failures, they will occur, you just don't know when or how. Anyway, with all the free virus protection available, I just don't understand why some people still insist on going without any protection.

I hear ya, I have a friend at work that was complianing about his ISP getting slower, when I asked him what he was running for AV he said "nothing, he didn't need it"...he only goes to 2 sites online....but he couldn't vouch for his 2 kids and his wife.....(who all have email)
I can't wait to get his system to see why it's "actually" so slow...

Hmm I don't use Anti Virus nor do I use Firewall.
Have no need for it. I use my common sense. I format quite often and run a online virus scan once in a while. Can't stand appz's idleing in the background using my precious memory :wave2:

Boy I do sure hope that you don't have any important data on your PC.

In theory, you could get away with that. However, should you mispell the URL of any popular website, or be lucky enough to recieve an infected email, well, you might change your mind.

Yes, we had a news story on that recently. Good memory.

I still say its just plain stupid. Maybe 5 or so years ago, you might have still got away with it. But with email viruses through Outlook and macro viruses, and potential just from potentially mistyping a URL (like ronbo said) its just stupid to not take the threat seriously.

some sort of firewall is needed, I use software and hardware firewall, that alone will stop most of the crap getting through.

I don't use AV, if my computer gets a virus I reformat hardrive and reinstall windows.

Anyway I use Linux most of the time these days no need for antivirus, and I can block off the ports quite easily in it.

I truly hope our members understand that there are viruses out there that can physically damage your system, not just hose your software. It is easy enough to create a virus that will, for example, fry your bios by flashing it fatally, or destroy your hard drives by crashing the drive heads. This is a cruel world, and there are a lot of sick people out there who really enjoy doing bad things to others.

The 16 minute time mentioned above is called "survival time", and is tracked on a real time basis by several places including this one:

http://www.dshield.org/

ATM, it is running somewhat longer than 16 minutes - it is now 21, and has been down to as low as 12 recently.

Also, I am moving this thread to the Security Forum for further discussion.

A final note, anyone who thinks they can safely connect to the internet today without all the protective software/hardware they can afford is just kidding themselves.
