Again, I cannot comment on how well they actually work because I have not tested either. As you can guess, I am a big fan of having SPI.
that is the one i was thinking...

What does SPI do?

Will this thing provide me a secure network, so i won't be sharing my internet with my neighbors?

There is an explanation of SPI earlier in this thread. As to the wireless, you need to set some additional settings like encryption, passwords (on some units), MAC address exclusion for all MAC addresses except for yours, and SSID. If you do that, you are reasonably well protected from wardriving.

That looks fine also. I have a Netgear "g" access point and it works very well. I think that some folks here have this unit and have praised it as far as I remember.

Edit, the detailed specs suggest that it has a few additional security protections built in that will add additional security. From a spec point of view, it looks like a good unit.

When I get PC Cillin Internet Security 2004 next month, I'll have another layer of protection, as it also detects spyware and removes it, besides viruses.

Hey all,

My router broke yesterday after 3 years of usage.....good run on a $40 router.....

I was going to get the 3Com OfficeConnect router, but any of these two below I can get locally at wholesale price........

I'm getting a new one and I'm stuck between a Dlink (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=6) or the Netgear (http://www.netgear.com/products/prod...ID=214&view=hm).

What say you ?

DLink - don't see anything there (but I am old and probably blind as well) about having SPI.

Netgear - HAS SPI.

So, go with the Netgear, for me SPI is a critical choice element in a router - besides I like their wireless better than the DLink.

As long as it showed it was closed you are alright. That used to bug the heck out of me. I tried everything, until I figured out it's how your broadband ISP identifies you. But, it does let others know there is something there. It will only open for your ISP.

I finally gave up worring about it after watching all my logs for days on end. That was 10 months ago, and I've been fine. I have'nt been compromised in over a year now......

Even if it shown as 'CLOSED', it relates to something there!

In the router under PORT FORWARDING forward to a un-used local IP such as (Example) 192.168.250.250
(just make sure port 113 is fowarded to a none existent IP [not used])

start port 113
end port 113

Then rescan, you should come up clean

Thanks Wayne!

I actually tried that previously but I wasn't sure if doing it that way was ok........it also did that for port 80.
