I agree with Wayne Security is complex and a never ending job.

We need to use all resources possible: antivirus, antispyware, firewall, disable services, etc...

SKI and pointreyes are great people

Thankyou so much for your help in this matter! I've never seen this Linksys report or answer given to this 113 port issue.

And thanks to the others that responded back to Wayne that DID use forwarding to stealth 113. I'll let you know how it goes. I have no doubt now that this will resolve this issue for me. That will end a year long question I've had about port 113 and the Linksys routers.

I posted this in another thread, but thought that more might see it here. This is a neat little application that checks what software is trying to access what ports, using what protocols, and what IP the software is trying to reach. No install, just unzip and run it.

I was curious to see how many attempts were made on my computer without my Netgear 624 router being used. I booted my computer at about 11 am, it's now 2:14 pm.

103 attempts :-P

this is just cable modem to computer...there's nothing on this computer so I figured it was safe to do this.

I tried and tried, but failed and failed again.

How do I stealth port 113 using ZoneAlarmPro?

I just added another layer of protection to my system, even though I have a hardware router by downloading and installing Kerio Personal Firewall.

I thought that I mioght mention that I am seeing a LARGE increase in the number of port scans over the last week or two. I had about 25 attempts to access my LAN just over last night. Probably as a result of all the worms and trojans infecting unprotected systems and turning them into zombies. Protect yourselves ... it is getting even more dangerous to be connected without adequate protection.

Scans

I have been monitoring this thread since it started and noticed that my ports have been scanned with much more frequency than ever before so I installed a Netgear router (RP614 v2) along with my software firewall for extra security. It is a shame that you literally need armour plated security these days just to be online.

Thanks for the comment Dread, appreciated. I'm curious how many members here have really protected themselves, even though this thread has been around now for a couple of months. Maybe I should post a poll?

A poll would be a good idea. I dont think security can be overstressed enough these days. I know others have posted stuff about war driving before and its scary to think about how many folks that have no idea of what types of dangers await them if they dont take some precautionary measures. They go out and buy all the newest wireless stuff, plug it in and figure everything is cool....
This thread alone is a whole education in itself. Glad it got stickied

No your not blind just to much info. Yes the Dlink has spi.
http://support.dlink.com/supportfaq/...I%2D624%5FrevC

IMO Dlink is better than Netgear. 800 number, Great web site (more info than you will ever need/want). More configurable than most low cost routers. From experience Netgear reliability is not so good. A friend of mine sets up/repairs wired/wireless networks for local businesses and was using Netgear when low cost was required. He is seeing a high failure rate on pci network cards (wired) and wired and wireless router/ access points made by Netgear. All the wired cards that fail are being replace with Dlink and the routers/access points with Cisco or Dlink. The last time I was at his house he had a pile of dead wired nic's from Netgear (maybe 20 or so). He has been doing the change over for about year and has yet to have a Cisco or Dlink product fail.

What do you like better about the Netgear as far as wireless?
