Hey PCB, do you know of any home hardware router/firewall units that actually have intrusion detection and prevention measures? If so, how expensive would you assume a unit like that would cost? Or in that situation, is it better just to have a deticated firewall computer and have that be your gateway to the internet? Kinda like a Clarkconnect box?

Sorry for the double post, but I believe I found a router that isn't horribly expensive that could help keep the bad guys out over my crappy D-Link Router. $141 will get it to your door. NETGEAR FWG114P

NETGEAR FVX538v2 Firewall/Router

I had to retire my old ZyWALL 10 Firewall/NAT Router/Gateway/DHCP Server, because

1. it only had a (one) 10 Mbps Half-Duplex WAN Port.
2. my ISP increased bandwidth from 640 Kbps (down- and upstream) to 15 Mbps downstream and 10 Mbps upstream.

I replaced it with the NETGEAR FVX538v2 Firewall/NAT Router/DHCP Server/VPN IPsec server. I decided for this one for several reasons:

1. price is very competitive
2. it has 2 X 10/100 Mbps Full-Duplex WAN ports (with load balancing or rollover)
3. it has 1 X GigE LAN port and 8 X 10/100 Mbps LAN ports
4. it has an Intel XScale IXP425 @533 Mhz RISC processor
5. it has a CAVIUM co-processor for IPsec enryption/decryption
6. it has 32 MB Flash memory
7. it has 64 MB SDRAM memory.
8. DynDNS certified (this is a great feature in the settings for those who have no fixed IP address)

The only bug in this device is that Keyword and URL blocking should and cannot be used until there is a new firmware that eliminates the serious problems it causes when it is enabled.

This is a very powerful, almost industry grade Firewall/Router for up to 200 LAN users and 100 VPN tunnels. It is UTM ready (Trend Micro 60 day Trial version delivered with device). NETGEAR ProSafe VPN Clientsoftware for 5 clients is delivered free of charge (software is developed by SafeNet).

For the more advanced users who need a more robust system (except for the bug as mentioned above) I can recommend this device. NETGEAR Technical Support is second-to-none. I got reactions within 24 hours! Impressive.
