I found the same router that PCB suggested for 19.99 :

I just want to make sure it's the version with SPI.

SF

On my NetGear RP614 v2 I just got at Best buy, it says this on the side of the box:

o Routing Protocols

Static & Dynamic Routing with TCP/IP, VPN pass-through (IPSec,L2TP),NAT, UDP, RIP-1, RIP-2, PPTP, PPPoE, DNS, DHCP ( client & server)

o Firewall

Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI), DoS Attack Detection/Logging, Dropped Packet Log, Security Event Log, E-mail LOG

o Functions

Automatically Detects and configures your ISP type, Port Range Forwarding, Exposed Host (DMZ), DNS Proxy, MAC Address authentication, URL Content Filtering, E-mail alerts of Internet activity logs

Hope this may help some of y'all

Is there any way to tell the version if the item is not in the box, marking of some sort? Maybe on the bottom??

Yes, apparently a "v2" is marked as such on the bottom of the router. If this isn't there, it's a v1.

Mine just says RP614...

And the side of my box is the same as UH60LimaTI indicates except that I don't have the "Firewall" section.

Oh well. When I get money again I may upgrade to wireless anyway.

That is correct. On the bottom of my new one it says,

"NETGEAR
Cable/DSL Web Safe Router Gateway RP614v2"

Hope this helps.

BTW, It was a charm to setup and use, as I am using it now. Very simple, even for me

I bet you feel better too! Do us a favor, rerun the GRC scan, I'll be interested in seeing what changed. Also, make sure if there is a stealth mode setting, to turn that on.

Hey there PCB,

I ran the test again and got 2 "FAILS" on the "COMMON" and "ALL SERVICE PORTS".

I guess I can fix this by adjusting some settings or something. Must read up on it. Also ,Can send you a PM with the Text part of the tests that failed and let you look at them. I'm figuring that that info shouldn't be view by all???

Thank you.

For home or commercial use? It looks more like a commercial unit. Also, not g, b only. Do you want g? BTW, I would prefer to keep specific hardware off this thread, so that we can use this thread more for the security issues, and not get it cluttered up with is mine better than yours type posts. I'll watch for any specific unit threads and respond there too.

Thx Bruiser, it's for home use. I checked the specs and supposedly it does have SPI support..

That it does, but check out the other specs, like the vpn tunnels, etc. Take a look at the WGT624 which is a 802.11g unit and has SPI as well.

Thanks Bruiser. I just wanted an informed opinion on it. I already have this unit, have had it for over a year now. I wanted to make sure it wasn't a POS.

802.11g is, excuse my ignorance, a wireless standard correct? No concern of mine in this case because I don't intend to go wireless. I appreciate the feedback!

Am I correct that you would not characterize the FVS318 as junk then? Thanks

Your unit looks more like a commercial unit looking at the specs. And, no not a piece of junk at all. 802.11b and g are two different wireless specs, b being 11mbs and g being 54mbs, i.e., faster, and a newer spec. I was looking at the wrong model before, FVM318, which was the wireless version of your unit. Sorry to mislead you.

Thanks Bruiser, you're alright.

Just can't live without a firewall any more. To many punks out there.
