Question Question re Tcp/Ip

I have a simple network with two computers and a shared printer. There is one net adapter in each. They are tied together with a Netgear 5 port switch. I propose to install a DSL Modem with a Linksys router between modem and the switch to share an Internet connection on each machine. On page 20 of the printed article you suggest unbinding TCP/IP from the adapters of a local network. Won't I lose connectivity to the Internet if I do this? Should I consider a separate network utilizing IXP for my local network? Thanks to all in advance for any suggestions. And thanks to the authors for a VERY informative article.

I think you misread our recommendation. We recommended unbinding TCP from two MS services, MS Client and File & Printer Sharing. We did not recommend deleting the TCP/IP protocol (you can't delete it anyway, at least in XP, you can delete in 2k, however), so your internet access is unchanged. Only the protocol used for LAN networking, file sharing printing, etc., not WAN Internet connectivity are changed by unbinding TCP from these services.

IPX question...

Hi guys

Quick question... I just bought a D-Link 4300 wireless router and got my first home network up and running... I was reading on the guide (Is great BTW) and read the IPX part... What is the difference between the TCP/IP and IPX as far as performance, will it make the network speed slower... I will be sharing my MP3, Documents, Pictures and that sort of stuff between my PCs and Laptop. Also, does IPX affects the wireless connectivity at all...

Answers, speed, you shouldn't notice any differences. Wireless, no problem, that's what I use with my laptop ("g" wireless) for LAN internal networking.

Ok I did it as the guide says and didn't work... Is there any configuration that needs to be done???
I noticed some options on the IPX protocol properties... "Internal Network Number" and " Frame Type"... Do I have to configure that between my PC and my laptop?

Internal network should be all 0s. Frame should be auto detect. Did you make sure to set the bindings correctly on both systems? And that IPX/SPX is checked on both machines and active for your network adaptors?

Yeap!!! Everything is just like the guide says...

edit: After I installed the IPX protocol, I noticed that NW Link NetBIOS got also installed. Do I have to uncheck that or leave it checked???

Thank you Tweakhound and PCBruiser. This article is very informative. I wanted to know if there will be another version for the truly "paranoid".

I don't understand why you are having problems printing it out. You did download the pdf version? When I made the pdf file, I specifically set the security settings for that so that it could be printed, and I have done so myself several times. If you still have problems, send me a private message with an email address, and I will email you a fresh copy to try printing from. Do not post the email address here because spammers will grab it with a spider and spam you to death.

This is a good specifications based research starting point (235 SPI routers listed):

Edited by PBC to make the link work. Thanks for the link.
