| Birdy, I don't know about the other guys, but I always hit the "Active Topics" button and so tend to see every topic being discussed. It is much easier than going through all the forums one by one. You could have done your own research utilising the "Search" function. And you could have been a little more civil to the moderator. btw, I use Kerio.

Kerio (the older version 2.14, not the newer versions) and Outpost are also very good firewalls

| God Bless You Guys. I am happy to have an answer. I am going to remove zonealarm as it is becoming for me a real pain! it need to much configuring and too much system resource in my taste! But at the same time I want to make sure my pc is correctly protected! So if Zonealarm protects any better then I will again prefere having it installed! @wallijonn, I didn't know about Kerio and now I regret that in topic I didn't mention it! When I said ZoneAlarm and sygate, they were the ones I knew and tought are the best! Please if you know of any better let me know>! |

| I googled for 'firewall reviews' and came up with: http://www.firewallguide.com/software.htm http://www.juliob.com/me/archives/000045.html http://www.webservertalk.com/Firewalls_reviews_95.htm http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/artic...39,pg,2,00.asp http://www.hackfix.org/software/firewall.html http://grc.com/lt/scoreboard.htm I used to use Sygate many years ago, found it clunky so I moved over to ZoneAlaram. But after having been hacked 5 times with ZoneAlarm I moved over to McAfee Guard Dog which was too intrusive. So I then tried OutPost. I really liked it for awhile. But then a WXP SP made me move to Kerio. Each firewall program has their pluses and minuses. (If you are a gamer which has to fight with enabling ports through a firewall you'll know exactly what I am talking about). No matter what we may say now about a firewall it will probably change in the future as new features are installed in WXP, as other firewalls are updated, as new ones come out, etc. By the same token you may want to take anything we say about a firewall based on prior versions with a grain of salt. If you have a fast enough processor with enough memory you may never notice any failings of a particular firewall. Ever have to exit a firewall to do Windows Updates? Since I do not use Norton products I would know nothing about their product. If their firewall is as intrusive to the registry as their Anti-Virus program I would never consider installing it. While you are contemplating the installation of a firewall, have you installed a HOSTS file at the very minimum? Do you have your WXP SP2 firewall enabled? If you have a cable or DSL modem, have you set up its internal firewall to the maximum setting?

| Read this: http://www2.agnitum.com/php_scripts/compare2.php Note: It is produced by Agnitum Outpost. However the table is well-made and quite objective. So it is still worth reading without taking a large pinch of salt. Now I am going to comment on each firewall. Norton Internet Security (Poor!) - It seems it is good for novice because it can help you to auto-configure a lot of things. If you are using home network, it can set them all automatically by running its wizard (although it sometimes becomes out of order, and I have to set it manually) - However its intrusion protection is bad. Norton is good at anti-virus protection, but not firewall. Sorry. McAfee Perosnal Firewall (Poor!) - I haven't used it. - But based on the reports I read, it is similar to Norton - a company which is good at anti-virus protection! But not for firewall! Outpost (may be good) - It seems to be good and strong. - However it is definitely not for novice or people who don't wish to configure a lot. It needs quite many manual configurations. It may suit expert users though. - I am not an expert. I can't use this program well. Zone Alarm (no longer recommended) - The opposite of Norton and McAfee - famous at firewall; poor at anti-virus (It offers anti-virus too, don't you know?). It can protect our system well. - It used to have some problems in version 5.0 (?), eg severely slow down the system. But for the latest version 5.5, it becomes good again. Good news! - It needs some configurations, but not many. I can live with that. You need to know how to setup home network with ZoneAlarm. It is not fully auto. You have to do some manual settings. (Updated on 16 Sep 2006) I don't know much about firewalls. So I can't comment on them. but among the famous firewalls, Zone Alarm stands out. By the way, I would like to emphasise something: - Firewall, unlike anti-virus, needs to configure properly in order to push them to full efficiency. So I never expect a firewall to configure everything auto for me. They can't be good. To protect our computers well, we need to cooperate with them. - Someone may be worried about the hogging issues of system resources. But in my viewpoint, if a program uses more resources, it should be trying to do more things, and may protect us more well-rounded. The same thing is true if a program does otherwise. We can't expect a program which uses very jot of resources but does the best job among all of its competitors. They need to be fed well in order to work well :P - However I'm not going to say using the most resources = the best. But there're some relationships between them. - Especially nowadays, a lot of good hardware are sold at cheap price. I have over-enough resources to run these programs without any problems/slow-down. So resource usage is never a big concern to me when I'm using rpotection-related programs.
