This thread still rocks the socks, but I have an addition. (And if I was the main administrator I'd make this a rule and enforce it with a fervor not yet observed by our human or other alien civilizations.)

Unless the Y, O, A and E keys on your keyboard are broken, there is no need to substitute "you" with "u" and "are" with "r". That means that "u r cool" should be written "you are cool" unless the keyboard is broken (or, possibly, that you have to hurry because your wife/cat/pet cthulhu is in labor and you have to get to the emergency room)...

(OK, if it's still 5 years or more until you're legally allowed to vote - which is at the age of 18 in most countries I know of that allow that sort of thing - you may be exempt from this rule also.)

I find it interesting that someone whose native language is presumably not English can write better English than most people born in an English speaking country. If you can do it, none of the rest of us has an excuse.

Kongo, you do write English very well. How many classes have you taken in English?

I agree with Cogar.. No excuse from us.

Well, English is introduced in grade 4 here in Sweden (age 11) IIRC. It's a standard English education that all pupils must attend, it's not optional in any way. Regular English classes are then a part of the general curriculum until grade 9 (the last grade in our junior high school, you could say).

In our version of high school (grades 10-12) there are three available English courses (in our high school the education is part mandatory curriculum, based on what the chosen educational program is, and part optional in that you can choose from a pool of courses). I took two of those high school level English courses. The third was basically more technical English, something I decided I didn't need as I read plenty of English literature by myself.

At the Uni level we had an English test exam at the beginning of the first year. It was used to decide which students could take an oral exam to automatically get the two credits without taking the long course that was given during the second year. I had the second highest score of the comp. sci. & tech. students, if I remember correctly. There was 160 or so of us...

My parents getting cable TV probably helped a lot too. They actually motivated getting it for that reason. I'm convinced it helped very much. I can't remember correctly but I think I started picking up English quite early. At 5 or 6 years of age. Only a few words, though. No real vocabulary until grade 4 when the English was organized and all.

Very interesting Kongo. I really wish we as Americans were subjected to a second language at an early age. I assume it's true what they say about being easier to learn when you are young. Thanks for the explanation.

Yes, I would say early age helps quite a bit. However, to be proficient, individual interest is always key.

In Sweden we also have a third language introduced in grade 7 (back in my days it was German or French, and if the teacher competence was there, Italian or Spanish). I chose German and took courses in German in high school as well. Still not very good at it. Well, to be honest, I suck. Lack of interest is to blame.

I´m sorry that this thread is too long for me tho read it all now, but since rule #7, in the first post still says
"7. Religious and Political topics are not allowed, even in the Off-Topic forum. There is a special “Heated Debates” forum for threads like that.
Even though threads can run hot in there, again refer to the above rule (NO FLAMING)….you still need to respect other members. The heated debates now has its own seperate forum on a new website/url. http://www.hdxzone.com/"

i want to annotate that the HDXzone no longer exists.

I can´t help mentioning that i found it kinda provocative, to see the link to this (no longer existing) forum still in our rules. I thought it has been removed after the tragic events that led to HDXzone´s extinction.

Greetings

Dru

P.S.:
10. Congratulations threads having to do with member post counts and birthdays will be eliminated from this day forward. Although this was a major part of the community for some time, it was decided to eliminate this as too many members saw this as a way for some members to "inflate" post count. Whether this is true or not is another debate..but we have a heated debate website for that.

This reference to HDXzone is even more provoking because of the smile at the end of the sentence.

Out of every thing I ever wanted to mention, that was it. If you lived beside me, you'de be the type of guy I'de donate my old stuff to. I just cannot stand people who use possibly the worst acronyms.

I would like to add a rule if it hasn't been stated before.

Please, speak the english language and use each word in it's native meaning. Do not say "tight" because you and somebody else are good friends. I can not stress this enough, words like chill and tight are used for the most bizare meanings nowadays.
